WhatsApp is known as a popular messaging app, but they added something new – their first short film. The 12-minute film titled, “Naija Odyssey,” features NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and will be released this week. According to the official description, Giannis “tells his origin story of many origins as he reconciles his roots, birthplace and sense of belonging between cross-cultural worlds.” The Milwaukee Bucks star, 2021 NBA Champion and Finals MVP, who was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, tells the story with his mother, Veronica.

The story is based on the famous Greek poem “The Odyssey.” In the past, WhatsApp has been accused of spreading misinformation, especially during election processes and pandemics, and this short film will help counter that position. The content is part of an endorsement deal Giannis signed with the app in February.

“‘Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives,” said Vivian Odior, WhatsApp’s global head of marketing, according to Forbes. “In navigating relationships, identity and even adversity, WhatsApp is there – allowing you to embrace all sides of you by connecting you with those who matter most.”

Giannis Helped Promote Premiere On Instagram
Giannis is known for his fun-loving attitude, goofy dad jokes, and as someone who seems to enjoy life a lot. She often shares her life on Instagram, and recently posted about the premiere of a WhatsApp film. In the clip, Giannis is dancing and having fun. The Bucks commented, “Dancing king?.” Other comments included, “You’re probably one of the happiest people I’ve ever seen!,” “Man, I love Giannis,” “I love your spirit ?,” plus lots of heart and fire emojis.

Antetokounmpo Family Tells Their Story In “Rise” Movie
Antetokounmpo’s family is not new to talking about their journey. Earlier this year, Disney+ released the original movie “Rise” based on the true story of three young Nigerian-Green brothers, Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas, who came to the United States and became famous for their success in the NBA. The film shows the struggle the family endured to reach where they are today.

The official description of the film on Disney+ begins, “Viewers have never seen a story like Antetokounmpo’s. After immigrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badaki, respectively) struggle to survive and provide for their five children. -children, while living under the daily threat of deportation. With their eldest still in Nigeria with relatives, the couple is desperate to obtain Greek citizenship but find themselves undermined by a system that blocks them at every turn. When they don’t sell goods to tourists on the streets of Athens with the whole family, the brothers–Giannis (Uche Agada) and Thanasis (Ral Agada)–will play basketball with the local youth team.”

Giannis Always Shares His Dad’s Jokes
Giannis posted one of his famous dad jokes on Instagram recently to help promote the premiere of WhatsApp. He captioned his video, “I’ve been holding this joke for a while ?? My new movie with @WhatsApp, Naija Odyssey, is out tomorrow. #WhatsAppPartner.”
Viewers of his clip commented on their excitement for the new short film as well as another dad joke. “Protect Giannis no matter what ?,” “How can you not like giannis man,” “Why does this actually make me laugh ?,” and many more filled the comments section.
