Having insomnia can complicate life in different ways, and actor Taye Diggs knows it all too well. He recently opened up about his long-term struggle with insomnia to host Janine Rubenstein on the “PEOPLE Every Day” podcast. Diggs, 51, said it all started after his son Walker, 13, was born.

Taye Diggs Reveals His Long-Term Battle With Insomnia

“This insomnia started when Walker was born. He won’t sleep through the night, so I don’t know how many hours I’ll be awake, and then I have to work the next day,” he said. “I don’t know how many hours I will get and it will affect my work. I would feel anxious and it created a cycle and I never really got over it.”

The Broadway alum says he’ll find a way to get through the day and night. “I’m going to try to do whatever I have to do to stay awake during the day and, and try to sleep and stay asleep, you know, whether that means more wine at night or more energy drinks and Red Bulls during the day . ,” he has explained. “I always find little hacks that will help me get through it. And recently my son took me aside and said, ‘What’s going on? You have work and then it’s time for us to hang out and you’re not there.’ And that bothers me. So I finally checked with the doctor.”

Diggs explained that it was difficult to get help, but he eventually saw a doctor who prescribed medication to help with insomnia. “It’s okay to ask for help because once I do, I’m given some options.” Diggs said the medication he was given, Qviviq, made a big difference. “I wake up between two and five every day and it affects everything, mostly my time with my son. So I took it and gave it a few days, and so far so good. My son can see the difference in how involved I am with him.”

Diggs raised his son with ex-wife Idina Menzel, 51, saying, “She runs the show.” Diggs told PEOPLE, “He has a career and he has his own relationships and he still makes sure that Walker is where he needs to be when he needs him. He has the best coaches and the best teachers, and we’re at the best school, and it’s all because of him. “

The “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” star will begin helping other “Stellas” get their groove back with a new Hulu show, “Back in the Groove.” Diggs will host an unscripted show that follows three women in their 40s who check into the Groove Hotel, a resort on an island in the Dominican Republic. The goal of the show is to help women “get their groove back” and hopefully fall in love with men half their age. Diggs recently posted about the new show on Instagram.
