Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann to be charged with fourth count of murder this week: report

Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is expected to be charged Tuesday with a fourth count of murder in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, according to a report.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney will announce the new charges once they are unsealed in court in Riverhead, according to NBC News, citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation.

Heuermann, 60, was named the prime suspect in the Brainard-Barnes murders when he was charged with another so-called “Gilgo Four” murder of sex workers found strewn on a Long Island beach over several days in December 2010.

Brainard-Barnes, who disappeared in 2007 when she was 25, was found strapped to a distinctive belt stamped with the initials “WH” or “HM” — which may have belonged to Heuermann’s grandfather, William Heuermann, prosecutors previously argued.

Heuermann, a New York City architect and married father of two, was arrested last July in connection with the infamous “Gilgo Four” case.

Authorities were able to identify Heuermann as a suspect after DNA from victim Megan Waterman’s hair matched hers, which investigators retrieved from a discarded pizza crust in January.

Heuermann is accused of killing Waterman, 22, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Amber Lynn Costello, 27, whose bodies were found wrapped in burlap within days of each other near where Brainard-Barnes was found.

The four women are believed to have advertised as sex workers when they disappeared between 2007 and 2010.

The years-long investigation that led to the arrests revolved around the discovery of more than 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County between December 2010 and April 2011.

His arrest also comes after Suffolk County created a special Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force in February 2022.

Neither Tierney’s office nor attorneys for Heuermann immediately responded to The Post’s request for comment early Monday.
