“Ginny & Georgia” has been greenlit for two more seasons with a new showrunner.
The Netflix original series, which starred Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey as the titular characters respectively, will now be helmed by Sarah Glinski for the third and fourth seasons; new reports have claimed. The writers will take over from Debra J. Fisher, who served as showrunner in its first two seasons.
“Ginny & Georgia” Renewed For Two Seasons With New Cast
Although “Ginny & Georgia” has been an amazing success since it started in 2021, its second season fared much better than Netflix expected. After its premiere, the project spent three weeks at the top of the streaming service’s internal rankings for English-language series, earning over 500 million hours of global viewing time in its first 28 days.
So Netflix is making the call to order more seasons. However, it has been reported that the four-month gap between the premiere of the second season and the announcement of the new pickup was due to the streamer’s decision to bide their time by making public news.
When sharing the big news on his Instagram page, the operator wrote “3 & 4” in white on a black background, along with a caption acknowledging the role the audience played in it becoming a hit that required two different seasons. “This is because of the fans ???❤️,” the caption said.
The announcement immediately sparked the comments section, and many people, including this fan, celebrated, writing, “I was worried Netflix was going to cancel the show… thank goodness it’s not over!!!”
“I know you will be renewed for more than 1 season! So excited to see this mother & son duo for more seasons,” the second excited fan chimed in. A third person exclaimed, “I’M FINALLY SCREAMING WE LOVE YOU. EXCITED,” and the fourth wrote, “Aaah gngbts ?? congratulations to all!!! Really like for peaches.”
“LETS FUCKING GOOOOO,” commented a fifth person, while this netizen expressed concern over the Netflix show, typing, “But plzzzzzz don’t tell me you wrote the 4th to be the last I don’t deserve that pain.”
As for the change of showrunner, Deadline shared that it comes after speculation of some friction between Fisher and “Ginny & Georgia” creator Sarah Lampert. Things have been strained between the pair as Fisher’s departure loomed last month.
He has now been replaced by Glinski, who appears to have been hired before the Guild of America (WGA) strike, which began on May 2. The new show’s cast was previously an executive producer on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” a creative producer on “Taste Buds,” and a writer on “Little Mosque on the Prairie.”
He has also won two Canadian Screenwriter Awards and was named one of the Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Next Generation’ in 2013.
