I have been using a Gmail account for years now and have faced several issues throughout my journey to date. But still, I can’t imagine my working life without this Google product. The reason is that it is convenient for me to use, even I have a Yahoo and Outlook account, but they can never break the link that we (Gmail and me) share.
However, if I talk about the problems I have faced with Gmail, they are endless, from minor to major, but I have always found a way out. To date, I’ve ended up writing several helpful blogs about Gmail issues and in this article, I’ve covered one of the most common issues with this popular email service.
Why is my Gmail not working? Or is Gmail down?
This is the most common concern of all other Gmail users. Gmail may not work for many reasons and I will discuss them one by one.
Although it is not rocket science, I have listed the steps required to successfully log into Gmail account.
- Open a browser on your computing device such as Chrome, Firefox, etc. In the address bar, type gmail.com to open the official Gmail website, click ‘Login’ on the top right corner.
- A new tab will open and you will see the Gmail login page. Enter the email address or phone number associated with the Gmail account and press ‘Next’.
- In the next step, enter the password and click ‘Next’.
- That’s it, you have successfully logged into your Gmail account.
Actually, that’s not all; sometimes that’s where the real story begins. What happens if the Gmail login fails on its first attempt? You’ll definitely make a second try, but what if that fails too?
Numerous factors create Gmail login issues, I have written down a few of them:
- There is a Gmail outage
- Using the wrong username or password
- Get a blank login screen
- Gmail won’t load
- Network related problem
- Facing error messages when logging in
- The browser is full of garbage
Gmail account login issues can occur due to the reasons mentioned above. Whatever the reason, be sure to apply the proper troubleshooting method, as outlined later in this guide.
Gmail login troubleshooting
Follow the provided troubleshooting methods to fix Gmail login problem instantly:
First of all, the network you are using must provide adequate signal strength. If you can’t sign in to Gmail, try connecting to a different network or check whether you can do other Internet activities or not. If the Internet works fine, the problem can also be on the Gmail side.
If Gmail is down, the servers may be affected. It can also happen that Gmail is down and if this is the case, check the server through the G Suite Dashboard page. A green button means there are no known issues, an orange button means a service outage, and a red button means a service outage. Also, if it shows a green button and you are still having problems, you should contact Gmail Support for that matter.
It is the most common reason and you need to make sure that you have entered the correct username and password for your Gmail account.
Another popular reason why you can’t log in to Gmail is that you don’t remember your password or your account has been hacked. Here you can’t do anything except to recover the password using the recovery information added to your Gmail account. To recover Gmail password, here are the steps that will help:
- First of all, go to the Gmail login page.
- Type the username of the Gmail account and press ‘Next’.
- Then click ‘Forgot Password’ and Gmail will ask you to enter the last password you remember. Or you can also click ‘Try another way’.
- Google will send a notification to your phone number linked to your Gmail account, please follow the related instructions or click ‘Try another way’.
- Enter the recovery email address to receive the verification code, enter the code and press ‘Next’.
- Set a new password and enter the same one twice to confirm, press ‘Next’ and you will be logged into your Gmail account.
If you have entered the wrong password multiple times, you may be temporarily locked out of your Gmail account. You can try to sign in again after 12 hours and check if the account has been unlocked.
If your browser is full of junk like cookies, caches, or history, it can create a problem loading the Gmail login page. The output is-
- clear cache
- clear history
- Delete temporary files
- Update your browser, if necessary
Some people log in with email client software and don’t use the browser. They need to enter the correct incoming and outgoing server settings if they can’t log in to Gmail.
Try to do this as the login problem can also occur due to installed antivirus or firewall. Disable them for a while and check if you can log in.
- If you have recently updated your password and have not saved the changes in the browser, you may need to update the password in your browser’s autofill settings, otherwise it will use the old one.
- Be sure to keep your Gmail account recovery information up to date, or you won’t be able to recover your account once you forget your password.
- Turn off any browser extensions or plugins to make sure they don’t create any problems. Or you can open Gmail in incognito mode with no extensions running.
Can’t sign in to Google account? Gmail Help Center at your service
If there is a further need to fix the Gmail issue, you can try contacting Google for help. This is what you should do:
- Go to the Gmail Help Center and you will see various issues that have been covered in different articles. Of those, you need to click on ‘I can’t sign in to your Google account’.
- On the next page, you will be asked to provide the details of the login issue you are facing.
- Select the check box for the problem you are having and you will be provided with steps to fix it. For example, I selected the first checkbox for ‘Forgot your password’ and you can see the solution I got in the image below.
