GoFundMe Created For Actor John Amos Has Been Taken Down

A GoFundMe created for actor John Amos by his daughter, Shannon Amos, has been taken down.

The “Good Times” star, known to fans as “America’s Dad” has gone back and forth on whether or not he is a victim of elder abuse. At first, she declared that she was not a victim of elder abuse, before later changing her mind, saying that she was a victim of elder abuse and that her daughter, who created the GoFundMe, was the cause.

Earlier this month, Shannon Amos created a GoFundMe for her father. He claimed the 83-year-old actor was fighting for his life in the ICU. She said she was a victim of elder abuse and needed money for legal aid and medical support. He had asked for $500,000, but the GoFundMe raised just over $13,000 from 300 people before it was pulled.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe told TMZ that the GoFundMe was taken down because Amos refused the money. “Ensuring that the donor’s intentions are respected is our priority. However, when informed that Mr. Amos wanted to decline the funds raised on his behalf, the GoFundMe was reviewed by our Trust & Security team and subsequently removed from our platform,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The money will reportedly be given back to the donor. Many people donated small amounts of money, like $10 to $20, but one donor pledged $500 to help the actor through his struggle.

A week later, the actor’s representative told People magazine that the actor was “doing well” and delivered a statement from the actor himself. “To all my fans, I want you to know that I played well. I am not in the ICU, nor am I ever fighting for my life,” the statement said. “First, I want the GoFundMe campaign about me to be stopped immediately and the funds returned to those who donated. My son and I will reveal more information at the appropriate time.”

In an Instagram post published on June 8, Shannon claimed, “On May 14th, I will receive a distressing call: from my father, sharing that he is hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, in excruciating pain. Despite being out of the country , I arranged for help to reach him. The ICU revealed his life was hanging by a thread.”

Although he claimed that his life was “hanging by a thread,” the actor denied his statement. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate allegations of potential elder abuse.
