Gordon Ramsay Loves How Social Media Has Changed The Culinary Industry

Gordon Ramsay can be a harsh critic, but one thing he loves is how social media has changed the culinary world. He also enjoys a good TikTok trend. As he prepares to open his Las Vegas restaurant later this week, the celebrity chef spoke to PEOPLE about his TikTok account, his new restaurant and his biggest critics.

Gordon Ramsay Is Happy With What Social Media Has Done For The Culinary World

“[Social media] is the best thing that has ever happened to our industry. It’s part of the culinary scene right now which is so exciting,” he said. “[The pandemic] is one of the most difficult moments for us in the industry. So, I like that.” He also explained that, instead of waiting a long time for restaurant reviews to be published, feedback can be shared quickly through social media.

Ramsay, 56, started his TikTok account shortly before the outbreak began and uses his page to post about viral food trends, as well as comment on culinary delights and disasters. He currently has more than 34.8 million followers. Ramsay said that one dish featured on the site, baked feta pasta, “got a lot of people through the epidemic.”

Gordon Ramsay’s TikTok Video Gets Millions of Views

“It’s interesting because you think, ‘Christ, does that really work?’ And suddenly you have feta, this grilled tomato dish that you serve to six or 10 guests for a very cheap price. That’s where it reaches the target,” he explained. “And you see 10 million likes and a hundred million followers like this particular dish because people can relate to it. And it’s exciting and it’s new. That’s the great thing about social media.”

Each of Ramsay’s TikTok videos gets millions of views. In addition to the “Ramsay Reacts” duet, he also sprinkled some food-related jokes into the mix. The latest video he sewed has him worried about his job when a boy gets off the bus and the first thing he says to his mom is, “Terrible sandwich, by the way.” After watching the drama, Ramsay said, “Wow, mom, you’re in trouble. And I don’t have a job anymore.”

One follower pointed out, “He’s coming for you.” Another viewer suggested Ramsay help moms by writing, “Gordon you need to make a tutorial for parents to make simple but great things for kids’ lunches.”

With only kind comments from the celebrity chef during the clip and a smile on his face, his followers took the comments to leave their thoughts. “You know the food is really good when Gordon gives a good review 😂,” one follower wrote. “When Gordon approved it was a big deal lol. 😅,” said another. Another viewer added, “Imagine waking up to Gordon Ramsey approving your cooking.”

And while the chef is known for his criticism of other people’s cooking, he has some critics himself. “My biggest critic is my daughter,” he said. “They said, ‘Dad, that’s a bad idea.’ ‘Dad, that’s a very good idea.’ ‘Dad, no, you’ve got to stop doing that.’” Ramsay is the father of three daughters, Megan, 24, HollyAnna, 22, and Tilly, 21, and Jack, 22, and Oscar, 3.

Ramsay’s Kitchen Las Vegas Opens This Week

As Ramsay prepares for the grand opening of his new restaurant, Ramsay’s Kitchen Las Vegas on Nov. 16, he hopes to change people’s perspective on Sin City restaurants. “There’s a side to Vegas that really stands out. This restaurant is about taking the bandits off and getting rid of the flamboyant side of Vegas and offering something more humble,” he said. “What I’m threatened to do is replicate other restaurants in Vegas based on that success. I want to do something different that doesn’t compromise success and can stand out from the crowd.”
