The Grammys brought in the numbers!
While other awards ceremonies such as The Critics Choice Awards experienced a decline in ratings, the 65th Annual Grammy Awards hit new heights in viewership and popularity. It also provided Beyoncé with a record-breaking 32nd trophy in her decades-long career.
The 2023 Grammys Enjoy a 30% Increase in Viewership During Its Sunday Night Broadcast
This year’s ratings will undoubtedly put a spring in CBS’s step, given the numbers for Sunday night’s broadcast of the Grammy Awards. The ceremony brought in about 12.4 million total viewers, up 30% from last year’s event, which had about 9.6 million viewers according to ratings that dropped later in the week.

With these preliminary numbers, the Grammys not only earned the spot as the most-watched show of the night but also received the largest audience for the ceremony since 2020. Likewise, the ceremony recorded its largest live streaming audience, across Paramount Plus and other CBS Platforms, with a 33% increase from last year.
Diversity went on to state that the broadcast garnered a potential 66 billion online impressions, ranking it as the “#1 social entertainment event in 2023,” per CBS. To date, 53 million social video clips of content from the show across various Paramount and CBS platforms have been consumed.
Amid record-breaking ratings, the 2023 Grammy Awards awarded the night’s Big Four prizes to several artists. While Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House” won album of the year, Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That” won song of the year, and Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” won record of the year.
Jazz singer Samara Joy was also not left behind as she received the best new artist award. Despite being beaten out by Lizzo, Raitt and Styles, Beyoncé won four awards, becoming the most awarded artist in the Grammys’ six-decade history with 32 awards.
The “Love on Top” hitmaker walked home with nods for best dance/electronic recording, dance/electronic album, R&B performance and best R&B song. His win tied him with Christian maverick group City Music, with Raitt, Kendrick Lamar, and Brandi Carlile coming in next with three Grammys each.
While Adele earned seven nominations, she only won one for pop music performance, and Taylor Swift won for best music video after earning four nominations. Mary J. Blige, who earned seven nominations, walked away empty-handed.
Threepeat host and comedian Trevor Noah emceed the event, which was graced with performances from Bad Bunny, Queen Latifah, Lil Wayne, GloRilla, Sam Smith, Jay-Z, John Legend, Rick Ross and DJ Khaled.
The CW & NBC Record Low Ratings For Their Respective Awards Shows
MEGA
When The CW aired the 28th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards in January, early ratings showed that only 900,000 viewers tuned in — a low score for such a glamorous event. However, The Blast shared that the low numbers appear to be in line with last year’s ratings which saw only 1.1 million viewers watch the ceremony, despite simulcasting on The CW and TNT.
The drop in viewership was similar to NBC, which only gained 6.3 million viewers when it aired The Golden Globes on Tuesday, January 11. That number represents a 26% decrease from last year’s figure of 6.9 million.
The awards show also posted a 1.1 ad rating, marking a 9% drop from 2021. Amid near-record lows, NBC execs noted that the Globes were “the most social special across all of television’s season so far (linear and streaming) , both in terms of social engagement and social video viewing.”
With these numbers in view, fans expect next year’s show to be even worse, given the controversy that has dogged the show’s organizers in recent years. In case you missed it, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) have been accused of engaging in fraudulent financial practices while lacking diversity and representation from the Black community.
The allegations were so strong that instead of holding the high-profile ceremony they do every year, the nonprofit group hosted a private event, excluding the nominated celebrities, last year.
Hopefully the HFPA will get its ducks in a row before next year’s ceremony with the help of its newly elected president, Helen Hoehne. Since his appointment, Hoehne has publicly addressed the allegations against the organization, announcing that they have undergone several reforms.
