Grandma of Georgia high school football player shot dead says he signaled something was wrong before killing

The grandmother of a high school football player who was fatally shot in Georgia says she knew something was wrong the night before the killing.

Maxine Smith, 51, has raised her grandson Brandon Smith since he was a baby and has been left “heartbroken” after the teenager was found shot to death Sunday a mile from the Manchester Police Department.

Smith told The Post that he had a hunch that something was bothering Brandon, but he never told him what it was.

“The way he looked at me, like he wanted to tell me something he couldn’t,” she said in a phone interview Wednesday of the last time he was with her.

The 17-year-old had gone to bed early Thursday night — as teenagers usually do — and had stopped by his grandmother’s room, where he was playing games with his siblings, to say goodnight.

The next morning, he discovered she had snuck out sometime that night when he went into her room to take her to school.

“They took my grandson’s life too soon because he loved football and he was going to be somebody,” he said. “He didn’t hurt anyone. He has a dream to take care of his family.”

Smith is sure the killer “knows him,” even though he doesn’t know who wants to harm his grandson.

Manchester police, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), had not named any suspects or made any arrests as of Wednesday afternoon. However, the GBI told Smith they had a “lead,” but did not reveal much else about the ongoing investigation into the grandmother.

His grandson was found dead the day before his championship football game. At the ceremony, his teammates came out with jersey number 52 in his honor.

Smith did not attend the game because he was too heartbroken and seeing the jersey “made me sad.”

His team, the Manchester Blue Devils, lost by one point.

Smith and Brandon’s three siblings – Janiyah, Janaya, and Brenlyn – are grieving his loss, with Janiyah taking it the hardest, according to Smith.

“They didn’t do too well,” he said. “Janiyah is facing it with difficulty.”

The four siblings are “really close” and Brandon has always “looked after his sister and brother.”

Smith wants her grandson to be remembered for his kindness, saying he was always “good to people.” He used to put leaves for his neighbors and play basketball and soccer with the neighborhood kids.

“My grandson has not done anything wrong. I want the world to know how good he is, he is a good boy,” he said.
