Grandpa shot dead trying to apologize after ‘minor fender bender’ in Walmart parking lot

A remorseful California grandfather was gunned down in a Walmart parking lot as he tried to apologize to his suspected killer for causing a minor fender bender.

Jonathan Mauk, 59, accidentally flipped his Chevrolet Camaro into suspect Shawntece Marie Norton’s car while out to meet his family, his son revealed to ABC 7.

Mauk drove through the parking lot, looking for an open spot, as Norton backed out of the parking lot. He reportedly hit Norton’s car.

“From what the witness told me, my father felt responsible. He was the one to blame, so he got out of the car to apologize, and that’s when someone else shot him,” his eldest son, Matthew Mauk, told the outlet.

Norton, 37, allegedly shot the grandfather in the face as he got out of his car to make up for the accident, according to KTLA.

He was accused of fleeing the parking lot after the shooting, but was arrested the next day.

Norton has been charged with murder.

Mauk’s son revealed that there was “no real damage” to his father’s car when he picked it up that day.

“There is a scratch on the fender. No dents, no obvious damage. There are scratches. That was the level of the collision that caused him to lose his life,” Matthew Mauk told the outlet.

Matthew Mauk said his father, who “likes to be called Grandpa” because “he likes the title,” only stopped at the store to pick up salt and some soda to make homemade jerky with the family.

“I can’t put into words why that happened or what would go through someone’s mind to make it seem like an acceptable action,” Matthew Mauk said. “None of it makes sense.”

Mauk is remembered by loved ones as a family man, classic car enthusiast, and friend you could count on.

“I cried when I found out he was killed,” Lee Hall, Mauk’s friend and colleague, told KTLA. “That’s what he likes — cars. He probably would have fixed the woman’s car for free, but he ended up shooting her.”

As the family tries to come together after his murder, Mauk’s sons say they won’t let that stop them from pursuing justice.

“We will be there for every court hearing – anything that has to do with this incident, we will be there,” Mauk said. “We’re going to speak up, we’re going to talk about it.”

Norton pleaded not guilty during his initial court appearance this week, according to the outlet.

He is due back in court on February 15.

Mauk’s senseless killing comes just weeks after a Colorado grandfather was also gunned down following a dispute.

Richard Sanchez, 60, was shot and killed when he argued with a 13-year-old suspect on a JPJ bus in Denver on January 27.

Police believe the argument between the alleged teenage killer and Sanchez started because the older man blocked the alley with his foot.
