Greta Gerwig, director of the live-action adaptation of “Barbie,” has finally addressed Jo Koy’s controversial comments about her hit movie.
The comedian sparked a media frenzy over his unpopular joke at the 2024 Golden Globes, which angered celebrities and fans alike. While many have labeled her thoughts on Gerwig’s films as “sexist” and “degrading,” the filmmaker responded with an interesting take on Koy’s jab.
Greta Gerwig Says Jo Koy’s Comments About Barbie’s Origins ‘Not Wrong’
As host of this year’s Golden Globes, Koy opened the awards show by comparing “Barbie” to her prime-time counterpart, saying: “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is in a plastic doll with a b— ies big.”
In her monologue, she continued her disparagement of the film, claiming: “The pivotal moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. Or what the casting director calls a character actor!”
While Koy’s comments sent fans into a frenzy on social media, Gerwig calmly responded to her joke. Instead of slamming the comedian for insulting her movie, she praised him for being right about Barbie’s origins. In his words:
“Well, he’s not wrong. She was the first mass-produced doll with breasts, so she was right. And you know, I think so many projects, those movies, are impossible because they’re about plastic dolls.

Gerwig noted in her recent appearance on “BBC Radio 4’s Today” that the movie inspired by the doll succeeded thanks to that empty mentality. Making a movie about the plastic doll gave her and her husband/writing partner, Noah Baumbach, the chance to create their iconic character.
“Barbie, by its construction, has no character, no story. She’s there for show,” the director explained. Gerwig’s calm response to Koy’s disappointing comments may be attributed to her film’s huge success.
“Barbie” received the most nominations at the Golden Globes and won awards for Cinematic Achievement and Box Office. Additionally, the film grossed billions of dollars at the box office, making it the first film from a solo female director to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
Jo Koy Labeled ‘A Complete Embarrassment’ For Golden Globes Performance
Following her famous Golden Globes appearance, Koy became the most hated person on the internet, with criticism pouring in from various social media platforms, celebrities like Diedre Hall not holding back their frustration.
The actor, who is famous for his role as Dr. Marlena Evans of “Days of Our Lives,” slammed Koy in a Facebook post, writing: “Host of the Globes, Jo Koy, is an absolute disgrace to herself and the Academy. Skip.”
His words sparked a similar reaction from fans, who flooded the comments section in agreement. “Totally agree. Worst host ever,” wrote one. “Agreed, very unprofessional and very embarrassing,” said another, while a third declared: “He’s totally unfit for this job. I agree 100%.”

“Did you see he was so nervous he didn’t have saliva in his mouth, AND he kept saying I wrote some jokes and the writers wrote others? The whole show sucks. I don’t know half of the ‘stars’ above, and I haven’t seen any of the movies,” the fourth recalled.
Koy’s comments about “Barbie” weren’t the only reason the internet was abuzz with criticism. The comedian also took a nasty jab at singer Taylor Swift and her highly publicized relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
In Taylor Swift’s Icy Reaction To Jo Koy’s Joke
While his remarks about Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig drew an unpleasant response from the crowd, Koy’s attempt to lighten the mood by joking about Taylor Swift was over the top. Faced with the singer’s frequent camera time at her boyfriend’s NFL games, she said:
“As you know, we show up after the football doubleheader. Big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL. At the Golden Globes, we had fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”
The “Bad Blood” hitmaker was unfazed by the sarcasm, sipping her drink with a cool expression that prompted Koy to apologize. However, fans of the singer attacked her on X, with one writing: “That landed with a giant sound and a death glare from Swift. Not Jo Koy’s best moment.”
“Poor Taylor Swift, between dating an NFL star, having the biggest concert tour ever, and being the person of the year, I love her so much,” another said sarcastically. When asked about the Grammy winner’s cold reception, Koy replied: “Aww, man, cute. I’m just saying it’s cute. I’m just saying it’s less cutting, that’s all.”
