Gwyneth Paltrow has taken a trip down memory lane about what she described as the “magical summer” she spent with the late Matthew Perry.
The shocking passing of the “Friends” star has thrown the world into mourning ever since it was announced. Tributes have poured in from left and right, including from Paltrow, who went a long way to rekindle memories of their brief romance some three decades ago.
Gwyneth Paltrow Reminisces Before Fame With The Late Matthew Perry
The “Glee” actress had a brief relationship with Perry in 1993 before she rose to fame on “Friends.” Paltrow praised the late actor in a tribute on her Instagram page hours after his death was announced.
The actor revealed that they met in the summer of that year and began their whirlwind romance at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts, where they spent most of their time together in plays. He wrote in part:
“She’s so funny and so sweet and so much fun to be around. We drive out to swim in the creek, drink beer at the local college bar, kiss in the long meadow. It was a magical summer.”
The actor went on to explain that Perry had already shot the “Friends” pilot at the time, but it hadn’t aired yet, so he was holding out hope. He added that they remained “friends for a while until we drifted apart, but I was always happy to see him when I did.
Paltrow didn’t mince words about how “very sad” Perry’s death has left her and so many others, as she concluded by writing, “I hope Matthew is finally at peace. I really do.”
Last November, The Blast reported that Perry discussed her hot romance with Paltrow in her memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which details her life before and after “Friends” aired.
The actor talked about his other romantic interests, including co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, and Courteney Cox, who made his work on set quite complicated.
He added that his attempts to explore things with Aniston were met with a “No”, which was defeated because Aniston just wanted to be friends with him. On her escapade with Paltrow, the star said:
“I filled that summer with three important things — gambling in Vegas at the direction of director Jimmy Burrows, a trip to Mexico myself; and a make-out session in the closet with Gwyneth Paltrow.”
True to Paltrow’s tribute, Perry recalled that they met in Williamstown at a big party where they both “slipped into the broom closet and made out”. She added that they were both still unpopular, so it didn’t make it to the tabloids, but Jimmy Burrows gave her a reality check. Perry concluded his account of the meeting by writing:
“This is the last summer of my life when I get to make out with a beautiful young woman named Gwyneth, and no one, except Gwyneth and me, cares.”
Investigation into Matthew Perry’s Death Is On Hold

Although initial sources revealed that the 54-year-old man was found dead in a hot tub at the residence on Saturday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has announced it will require additional investigative steps.
Perry’s death is currently marked as “delayed” pending toxicology reports and autopsy results. So far, it is difficult to determine the cause of his death until the coroner obtains a blood test.
Hours before his death, the actor was reportedly involved in a 2-hour game of pickles, during which he sent his assistant out for a quick errand. Upon the arrival of deputies, Perry’s body was found cold and unresponsive, leading to a 911 call at his residence.
Medical officials reportedly found several prescription drugs that were not illegal drugs in his home, denying rumors that he died of an overdose.
Antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs and COPD drugs prescribed for patients with severe respiratory problems such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis were among the drugs found in his home. The “Don’t Look Up” actress has previously battled drug abuse, and in her memoir, she spoke about it and wrote:
“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should die. People would be surprised to know that I’ve been mostly unconscious since 2001. Save for about sixty or seventy minor accidents over the years.”
Perry has been in rehab 17 times and nearly died from opioid abuse.
