On Wednesday afternoon, People magazine published an article reporting that Lahaina, on the northwest side of the island of Hawaii, was mostly destroyed by high winds and brush fires fueled by low humidity.
According to Hawaii News Now, tourists and residents alike were seen ducking outside the harbor and into the ocean to escape the fire, where they were later rescued by the Coast Guard. The outlet reported that at least a dozen people were rescued from the water by both boats and helicopters near Front Street, where many businesses were reportedly destroyed.

“The Coast Guard has responded to affected areas where residents are entering the ocean due to smoke and fire conditions,” Maui County officials said in a statement. “The individual was transported by the Coast Guard to a safe area.”
One resident told CNN that Lahaina was “devastated,” adding, “People jumped into the ocean to escape the fire, were rescued by the Coast Guard. All boat owners were asked to rescue people. It was apocalyptic.”

Reports are also coming in of 911 and cell service being unavailable island-wide due to fires raging in Lahaina, south of Lahaina in Kihei, and inland, near the town of Kula. According to Hawaii News Now, more than twelve thousand residents were without power on Wednesday.
“It’s very difficult. I’m now in the Upcountry and just knowing I can’t get any of my family members,” Lahaina resident Tiare Lawrence told the publication. “I still don’t know where my sister is. I don’t know where my stepfather is. Everyone I know in Lahaina, their houses have burned down.”

While Nastia may be safe from the wildfires, there are also concerns about Hurricane Dora. According to the National Weather Service, the category 4 storm was about 500 miles south of Hawaii, but still contributed to damaging winds on Maui.
Fortunately, forecasters said that wind speeds “will continue to decrease” over the next few days as the typhoon moves away from the island.
