Halle Berry And Cory Booker Turn Up The Heat With Menopause Talk

Berry recently visited Capitol Hill to “get a bill passed that will provide more research so doctors can get it right again.”

Booker and Berry recently sat down to bring more awareness to perimenopause and menopause, something that isn’t talked about enough and affects almost every woman.

“Every woman, if you live long enough, will go through menopause, and most women spend the longest period of their lives in the premenopausal or menopausal years, like three decades,” Berry told Booker.

“So, for there to be no information for the situation that every woman goes through, and she spends most of her life is absurd. It just doesn’t make sense to me.”

Berry, 57, says a big part of the problem is that there’s a stigma around talking about menopause, which is why she got involved and tried to “downplay it.”

“When we reach this time in our lives, this is our best year. So to think that we should wrap it up or that we don’t have to take our health seriously or just white knuckle these years and not pay attention to all the things that happen in our body, I think is a real problem,” he said.

“And that’s what most women do. We can’t talk about it and when we go to our doctor to talk about it, only 13 percent of the doctors understand the menopausal body, so they can’t really help.

Berry says her friends are “starved” to talk about menopause and “have no shame,” and that they all experience a lot of the same things.

Booker said that the medical profession and researchers seem to focus more on men than women and that angers him.

“The amazing thing to me is that here we are in 2023 and some of the fundamental things that you’re proposing here in Washington, we haven’t seen a bill like that passed,” Booker said.

Berry said she thinks that all women in the Senate will come together, whether republican or democrat, to support this bill, which will be only the second time in history that all women in the Senate will support something together.

Halle Berry Finds More Research To Do

“The more we know, the more we can tell the American public,” Berry told Booker. “We need to understand how menopause affects early onset Alzheimer’s, or dementia, or Parkinson’s disease, or heart disease, diabetes, and disproportionately, black and brown women suffer in a better way so we need to understand why and try to solve the problem more holistically.”

Berry goes on to explain that in order to fix something holistically, they need to know how to do it. She also said that many women do not fully understand the changes that menopause can bring. It is not only about hot flashes and brain fog, because there are many other things that happen in our body.

“And it seems, and you mentioned the word shame before, but there are people who might feel almost ashamed to come forward and talk about things that we should be talking about,” Booker added.

Besides not realizing all the changes that menopause can bring to a woman’s life, there are also racial differences to keep in mind.

The bill Berry is working on focuses on menopause research, education and awareness. She also wants more discussion about how insurance should cover more menopause treatments for women.

“If men were going through menopause, this would be known, and you know it’s true,” says Berry, with which Booker wholeheartedly agrees.

Like almost all aspects of women’s health, we need to talk more about perimenopause and menopause, normalize these conversations, and increase funding for research into better treatment options! As you say, HALF of the human population through this experience – they are not something to hide or suffer in silence! ?” one follower wrote.

Another added, “Thank you for this Halle. Entered Menopause early due to emergency hysterectomy 10 years ago. I feel so alone and yes the stigma is real. Glad we’re raising awareness and support. ?”

“Yes! This is a necessary topic of conversation. There is so little information and so little support even from the medical community. Women spend years in this transition and it can take a toll on mental and physical health,” wrote one follower.

Another added, “I love this. It is good for women to know that we are not alone and that there are options.”
