Hamas terrorism in Israel: Western leaders ‘strongly condemn’ attacks

“I condemn the indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians,” said America’s top diplomat in Israel Stephanie Hallett in position at X, formerly Twitter. “I am in contact with Israeli officials, and fully support Israel’s right to defend itself against such terrorist acts.”

Josep Borrell, the head of the European Union’s diplomacy, condemned the hostage-taking and demanded their immediate release.

“The news about civilians being held hostage at home or in Gaza is terrible,” he said. “It is against international law.”

The Italian government said it was closely monitoring the attack.

In a statement from the Italian president’s office, the country said it supports Israel’s right to self-defense.

“Terror will never happen,” the statement said.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also expressed support for Israel and expressed concern for UK nationals on the ground there.

“I was shocked by the attack this morning by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens,” he said posted on X. “Israel has the absolute right to defend itself. We are in contact with the Israeli authorities, and Britons in Israel should follow travel advice.”

In Russia, leaders called for an “immediate ceasefire.”

“We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to immediately cease fire, abandon violence, show the necessary restraint,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Saudi Arabia, which has been working with the US towards a peace agreement with Israel, is trying to overcome the situation.
