Harrison Ford Defends The De-Aging Scene In ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’

Actor Harrison Ford contemplates a de-aging scene in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month.

Director James Mangold previously confirmed that the scene lasted about 25 minutes and reduced Ford’s age to ensure he was in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

While some fans are unhappy with the VFX technology created specifically to take away the 80-year-old actor’s age, it seems the “Star Wars” alum has no problem with it.

At the Cannes Film Festival, “The Fugitive” actor defended his use of VFX technology to recreate his looks from decades ago.

“I know that’s my face,” Ford said (via Entertainment Weekly). “It’s not some kind of Photoshop magic — that’s what I looked like 35 years ago. Because Lucasfilm has every frame of the movie we’ve made together over the years. And this process, this scientific mining of the library, this has been well executed [use]…”

“It’s just a gimmick unless it’s backed up by a story, and it sticks out like a sore thumb if it’s not honest, it’s not real… I mean, real emotion,” he continued. “So I think it’s used very skillfully.”

Ford also expressed his satisfaction with his current appearance. “I’m very happy with it, but I don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I was that guy again,’ because I’m not,” Ford said. “I’m really happy with the age. I like getting older. It’s good to be young, but my s—fire can die, and I’m still working.”

James Mangold Explains a Little About the De-Aging Process

In an interview with Total Film Magazine earlier this year, director James Mangold said that Ford was “very talented and agile” while filming the scene where he would finally lose his age. Mangold went on to say that it was easy for Ford to “pretend that he’s 35.”

“But the technology involved is another matter,” Mangold told the magazine. “We have hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-up, in medium, in wide, in every kind of lighting, night and day. I can shoot Harrison on Monday because, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35-year-old, and I can look at the dailies on Wednesday with his head replaced.”

“It’s not a year of trying to get the first pass,” Mangold continued. “It’s incredible technology, and, in many ways, I didn’t think about it. I just focus on shooting what [approximately] a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to let it rip.”

“The goal is to give the audience a full-bodied sense of what they’re missing,” he added. “Because when the movie was released in 1969, they had to make adjustments to the current situation, which is different than before.”

Harrison Ford Previously Praised De-Aging Technology

The Cannes Film Festival is not the first time Ford has defended the use of de-aging technology in the film. In February 2023, Ford appeared on “The Late Show” and told host Stephen Colbert that Lucasfilm created his look after combing through old footage of the actor from his previous roles in “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” to create a younger him. own self.

“They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns,” Ford said. “Because I made a lot of films for them, they have all this footage, including out-of-print films. So they can mine it from where the light comes from, from that expression.”

“I don’t know how they do it. But that’s my real face,” continued Ford. “Then I put little dots on my face and I say words and they make [it]. It’s great.”

Although she seems happy with the technology now, the “Witness” actress admitted to Empire that seeing herself age is “a little creepy,” adding, “It’s the first time I’ve seen it where I believe … I don’t think I want to know how it works, but it works. It doesn’t make me want to be young. I’m glad I’ve reached my age.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will be released in the US on June 30.
