Former One Direction member Harry Styles joined a growing list of celebrities to pay tribute to late Fleetwood Mac music icon Christine McVie. According to his family, the artist died on Wednesday after battling an undisclosed illness. Since then, fellow celebrities, including his former band members, have taken to social media to share their condolences.
McVie rose to fame in the 1970s and 80s as a member of Fleetwood Mac. He is the writer/co-writer of half of the group’s “Greatest Hits” anthology released in 1988 with eight million copies sold. Some of his most popular songs include “Songbird,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “Say You Love Me,” “Hold Me,” “Little Lies,” “Don’t Stop” and several others.

During his Thursday night show in Chile, Styles delivered a song tribute to McVie. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer performed “Songbird” in his honor, one of her best-known songs from Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album “Rumors.” The piano ballad was one of McVie’s songs where she took over vocal and songwriting duties.
In a video taken by viewers, Styles is seen playing an acoustic guitar in a soulful rendition of the song. At the end of her performance, she blew a kiss to the sky and said, “Thank you, Christine.” The Santiago, Chile show is the actor’s latest stop on his “Love on Tour”.
Styles is known to be a huge Fleetwood Mac fan and, over the years has spoken of his lifelong love and admiration for the group. He revealed that as a child, one of the first songs he learned was Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”.

Styles has previously cited Fleetwood Mac as his inspiration for past solo music endeavors such as his self-titled album in 2017. One Direction also covered the band’s “The Chain” that same year for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. The show went viral online and now has over 32 million views on the platform.
The “As It Was” singer has also performed with Steve Nicks, lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, on several occasions. They sang titles like “Stop Draggin’ My Heart” and “Landslide.” Styles is also the person who inducted the lead singer into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
In addition to his latest song tribute, the artist paid tribute to McVie shortly after his passing by sharing a photo of him. The photo was posted on November 30 with caption “RIP Christine McVie” with a black heart and white dove emoji.

On Wednesday, McVie’s family announced that the keyboardist had died at the age of 79. The news was revealed on social media; however, the cause of his death was not mentioned. The family stated that the singer died in hospital after a “short illness” but did not indicate which hospital he was in.
In a previous interview with Rolling stones, McVie spoke of his “pretty bad health” and revealed that he had been suffering from a debilitating back problem. Following his death, several celebrities posted tributes to him online, including Mick Fleetwood.
In an Instagram post, he wrote, “Part of my heart flew today,” the drummer wrote on Instagram. “This is the day that my sweet Friend Christine McVie has flown away… and left us, those who live on earth, to listen with bated breath to the sound of the ‘songbird’, reminding someone and all of the love that surrounds us to achieve . to and touch in this precious life that is bestowed upon us.”
Late Icon Shares His Experience Writing ‘Songbird’
Given how close the song “Songbird” is to McVie, Styles’ choice of song to honor the late singer is not surprising. The music is notable for its moving lyrics and McVie’s soft vocal performance on it. While describing the experience of writing “Songbird,” the artist revealed that it felt “spiritual.”
According to McVie, he woke up in the middle of the night and started playing a song from front to back on his piano. At the time, no concept or prior writing was presented for the track. “Songbird” was recorded in the studio the next day.
Styles recently concluded a brief residency at the Los Angeles Kia Forum. Three shows, however, were postponed and will take place towards the end of January. The artist is currently in the midst of a short run in South America and will be in Argentina and Brazil in the coming weeks.
