Hayden Panettiere Details Daughter’s ‘Traumatic Reaction’ After Losing Custody

Actress Hayden Panettiere has shared that her daughter Kaya suffered a “trauma reaction after she moved in with her ex Wladimir Klitschko.

The former couple began dating in 2009, broke up, and reunited several times before finally splitting in 2018. The actress lost custody of her daughter amid her struggles with alcoholism that forced her into rehab.

She shared that her daughter started asking other women if she could call them mom and described Kaya’s loss of custody as heartbreaking. Panettiere also revealed that she was only allowed to visit Kaya and hoped the custody arrangements would change.

In a preview of her “Today” show episode of “Red Table Talk,” which will air in its entirety on Wednesday, Panettiere detailed the “traumatized reaction” of her daughter, Kaya, after her ex Klitschko was granted full custody of her.

The actor in the past suffered from alcoholism which played a role in losing custody of his 7-year-old son. Kaya then moved to live with her father in Ukraine and began the strange act of “asking other women if she could call them Mommy.”

“I remember her dad calling me, and he said, ‘Kaya is going to go and ask the other women if he can call them Mommy,’ and my breath caught, and my heart stopped, and he laughed,” Panettiere said on the show that. to Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Banfield-Norris and guest co-host Kelly Osbourne.

While the retired boxer found the whole thing funny, the Nashville alum was a bit “horrific” because he believed his daughter’s actions were due to the trauma of living away from her mother and therefore needed the same relationship.

The actress continued: “She didn’t understand because I was the one who saw it, it was a trauma reaction. It was a cry for help. I immediately said, ‘Can I talk to my daughter?’ And when I asked him about it, he went ‘goo goo gaga’ talking. Like, just talking nonsense. I’ve never heard him do that. It’s trauma that he’s going through, I’m not around.”

Panettiere has since entered rehab to help him deal with his long-term alcoholism. However, he still regrets losing custody of his son because of his actions.

In the show, the actress described the loss of her son as “very sad” and one of the most “heartbreaking” moments of her life. He shared that the transfer of custody was not discussed, given that he was struggling with his addiction at the time.

Although he is doing well today, Panettiere admitted grimly that this has not affected the current custody arrangement and added that there is no evidence it will change anytime soon. Meanwhile, he is only allowed to visit his daughter at his current location.

The actor explains in another scene, per Page Six: “I have been told that I can go and see him at any time. “I just have to keep hoping that one day when he’s old enough that his opinion is respected a little more and his wishes are heard, there will be more proactivity on that side.”

The “Heroes” alum went on to share that she considers her ex a “great father” and believes he is only acting in their daughter’s best interest. However, he thinks that Kaya’s separation from him might have a negative effect on him regardless of his past.

“Kids need their moms,” the Golden Globe nominee said elsewhere on the show (via Page Six.) “I have never harmed her or done anything that would, in this country, they would not take my child from me.

“It’s not going to happen,” Panettiere added. “When he was there, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

Panettiere and Klitschko dated on and off from 2009 to 2018. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2014, and called it quits in 2018 amid the actress’ battle with addiction.
