Hayden Panettiere is starting her 30s with a new life after overcoming her alcohol and opioid addictions. The actor used a 12-step program to overcome his addiction, and it’s a philosophy of abstinence that helps addicts return to life without their addictive choices.

Panettiere began her addiction to alcohol while on the 2012 hit musical drama “Nashville” and began using prescription painkillers after giving birth in 2014. After giving birth to Kaya, her daughter with ex Wladimir Klitschko, Panettiere quickly developed postpartum depression.

During the interview with Women’s health UK, Panettiere talks about what triggered his alcohol abuse. He said, per Daily Mail“I was told how to be and how to live by so many people in my life. I want certain decisions to be my own, and no one can stop me. What I put into my body is like an act of resistance.”

His Battle With Alcohol And Opioid Addiction

During the interview, Panettiere talked about alcohol as a “coping mechanism,” saying other people choose things like fitness. He says, “Alcohol may make you feel better at the time, but it makes you feel worse the next day, and then you do it again.”

The “Heroes” star also opened up about using painkillers to manage her postpartum depression and described it as “extreme despair.” The depression was exacerbated by a former neck injury that continued to bother him. He said, “I was in so much pain. My tolerance got so high so fast that it became a problem.”

Panettiere added, “I should have been on antidepressants [to cope with the postpartum depression], but you must find the right one that works for you. They don’t mix well with alcohol, and I’m not ready to stop drinking.”

Panettiere previously went through rehab in 2016, which she shared Women’s health was his idea because he “drown”. By the age of 30, the actress had to do another rehabilitation program, where she was encouraged to create a life with complete abstinence from any addictive substances.

She said, “My body was like, ‘enough.’ I hit 30. My face is swollen. I have jaundice. My eyes are yellow. I had to go to a cardiologist. I hold an unusual weight. My hair is thin and falling out in clumps.”

The actress shared that a big part of her recovery has been learning to live “in remission.” He explained that one of the steps in his 12-step program is “making amends. Panettiere said, “If someone wants to be a good person and the best version of themselves, they can choose to do that.”
