Here’s why you shouldn’t record meltdowns on an airplane: FAA insider

If a passenger turns upside down on your next flight, think twice before you try to shoot a viral video.

A Federal Aviation Administration safety representative said filming a tired passenger would likely increase the airline’s wrangling and make it more dangerous.

“If someone has a cell phone in your face, it can make things worse,” FAA representative Trey Walters told Insider in an interview Tuesday.

“If a flight attendant, for example, is trying to take care of a passenger who is having a problem, asking people to put their hands in front of that person’s face, trying to film the situation definitely poses an additional risk.”

Walters, who works as a commercial pilot, said airline staff were likely to be “distracted” from their duties, which could be particularly dangerous if the plane were in the air.

In recent months, dozens of videos of unruly passengers have gone viral on social media.

Just last week, model Morgan Osman was filmed spinning as she stormed off an American Airlines flight following an altercation with a fellow flight attendant.

“Film me, I’m famous on Instagram, you f–king bum,” the brunette was seen saying in the now-viral video recorded by someone else on the plane.

He explained that being recorded made Osman worse, but thankfully the plane was still on the track and there was no danger.

Earlier this month, a video of a couple dying in the bathroom of a Ryanair jet went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Some airlines specifically prohibit recording other passengers, and not just for privacy reasons.

“Any photography or recording of customers or other airline personnel that poses a safety risk, or that interferes with the crew’s duties is prohibited,” said a 2018 report issued by United Airlines.

However, the airline claims that “capturing private events” on their planes is “allowed.”

It seems almost instinctive for passengers to record any drama that happens on board — and there’s no shortage of flight footage on social media.

In July, footage of Tiffany Gomes’ flyer was also shared across the internet after it was caught by a fellow passenger.

The marketing executive was said to have been kicked off the flight after he accused another passenger of stealing his AirPods.knuckelslawncare/Tiktok

The marketing executive was allegedly booted from a flight from Dallas to Orlando, Florida, after he accused another passenger of stealing his AirPods — and strangely stated “that’s not true.”

“You can sit on this plane and you can die with them or not. I’m not going,” he said as the plane taxied, according to the clip.

He asked the crew to “stop the plane,” and the plane was brought back to the gate and Gomes was removed.
