Hillary Clinton, Lizzo And More Remember 50th Anniversary Of Roe v. Wade

Celebrities have marked the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

The world is changing after the US Supreme Court struck down constitutionally protected abortion rights, leading to the rollback of women’s reproductive rights in several states.

In fact, Florida tightened its pregnancy limit from 24 weeks to 15 weeks with specific exceptions. However, despite these changes, abortion rights activists like Lizzo, Hillary Clinton, and Obama have spoken out about bodily autonomy.

President Joe Biden: ‘Congress Must Restore Protections Roe v. Wade In Federal Law’

Although abortion rights advocates have marched every year on January 22 — known as Roe v. Wade Day — since 1973, the mood was different on Sunday. In addition to rallying for the protection of abortion rights, protesters mourned the Supreme Court’s decision and the loss of women’s reproductive rights.

The atmosphere was similar at the White House as President Joe Biden issued a statement expressing his concern about the decision. After acknowledging “that last year, the Supreme Court took away constitutional rights from the American people,” Biden stated that:

“Women should be able to make these very personal decisions free from political interference. Still, Republicans in Congress and across the country continue to push for a national abortion ban, to criminalize doctors and nurses, and to make contraception more difficult to access. It is dangerous, extreme and untouchable.”

He ended his speech by pledging to “continue to fight to protect a woman’s right to vote,” declaring that Congress needs to “restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law.” For her, that’s the only way “women’s right to vote in every state” can be strengthened.

Clinton added her voice to the fight with an Instagram post featuring a screenshot of her tweet, which read, “Today should be the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. We know MAGA Republicans will not stop until abortion is banned nationwide. So we cannot stop fighting for reproductive freedom everywhere.”

Meanwhile, Lizzo posted a campaign for Yitty — her shapewear brand — to Twitter, reiterating her and her brand’s position on bodily autonomy. “MY BODY IS NOBODY’S BUSINESS. On the 50th anniversary of roe v. wade, we’re sharing our story — reproductive care is health care,” the “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” singer wrote on three of her campaign posters.

The images touch on Yitty’s plan to “liberate the body by raising our voices” as it believes that “only YOU should have a say in what you do and how you feel about your body.”

A closer look at the tweet reveals that the body positive queen also features five reproductive rights advocates who emphasize how women making autonomous decisions about their bodies and health is important to themselves and others.

They include Macy —digital content creator, Amelia — director and co-founder of Shout Your Abortion; Kenyatta — reproductive justice advocate; Chloe – a mother; and Ash — a trans and reproductive justice activist.

Back on Instagram, Barack Obama asked his 35.7 million followers to “join the activists who have been sounding the alarm on this issue for years—and act,” while his wife, Michelle Obama, highlighted nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to create “the fairer , the fairer America we all believe in.”

The Blast reported last June that Lizzo is dedicated to helping people in need following the Supreme Court ruling. Immediately after the announcement that Roe v. Wade was canceled, the 34-year-old announced that he was donating $1 million to support Planned Parenthood.

The artist, who is working with Live Nation to achieve that goal, revealed that $500,000 will be raised through touring for the “Special” album, while Live Nation will handle the rest.

In her initial update, Lizzo shared that the money would be donated to Planned Parenthood. However, during a conversation with fans in the comments section, he added the Abortion Fund.

“I’m pledging $500,000 from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. Live Nation agreed to match to make it $1,000,000. The most important thing is that action and vocal organizations like them need funding to continue offering services to the people most harmed by this ban,” he wrote to his fans at the time.

The tour lasted from September 23 to November 18 last year.
