An Indianapolis homeowner described foiling an attempted home invasion — in which he stole the suspect’s gun and fatally shot him — like an action sequence straight out of a movie.
When a masked man broke into Brent Smith’s home shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, hitting him in the head with a gun during an attempted robbery, Smith fought back, launching both men through a glass table during the fight.
“It was like a movie, me and him wrestling with the gun,” Smith told FOX 59 Indianapolis.
Smith admitted to shooting intruder Damon Swanigan Jr. with the suspect’s gun during the struggle.
After shooting the would-be robber, Smith heard what sounded like “thousands of gunshots” coming from outside his house.

“When the gun went off I heard thousands of shots,” Smith said. “It was a lot of shots, man, a lot of shots.”
Smith said he exchanged gunfire with additional suspects waiting outside, using both the suspect’s gun and his own. The attack damaged the siding and front door of Smith’s house and broke the window of a car parked in the street.
“I didn’t think it was them or me at all. I’m basically just trying to survive, man,” Smith added.

Smith was detained and questioned by police overnight before being released, as the law allows people to defend themselves and their homes with deadly force.
The next morning Smith became emotional over what had happened, telling the outlet he had no intention of killing anyone.
“That doesn’t make sense mate. I don’t want to do that,” said Smith. “I don’t know his intentions, but I don’t want to be shot. That’s all there is.”

Police are seeking information on the suspect who fled the scene.
Their investigation is ongoing.
