House Republicans are investigating a leaked glossary of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) terms passed around the National Security Agency, which they say provides a “deeply troubling” look into the intelligence organization’s “hiring and contracting process.”
Representatives Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) wrote in a letter Tuesday to NSA Director Paul Nakasone that the glossary includes “incoherent” definitions of terms about gender, race and capitalism that could “harm national security. .”
Lawmakers are asking for information about who distributed the glossary, whether the employee was disciplined and when it was removed from circulation.
“We understand the NSA believes that an employee posted this glossary to an internal server without authorization and [it] was taken down as soon as it was found,” they wrote.
“Overall, it raises these and other questions that as members of the House Armed Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, we have to answer to conduct oversight and ensure the NSA is focused on addressing threats to US interests.”
The glossary includes prominent social justice terms such as “white fragility” and “settler colonization,” as well as support for critical race theory as promoted by authors Robin DiAngelo and Ibrahim X. Kendi, according to a copy first published and reported by the Daily Wire last week. .
Waltz as a member of the House Intelligence Committee was able to confirm the authenticity of the document.
The Post has obtained a copy of the glossary, which also uses the words “AFAB/AMAB: Assigned Female At Birth, Assigned Male At Birth,” “genderqueer” and “dragqueen/king.”

The NSA declined to comment on the 34-page unclassified document, which was released on May 6, 2022.
“[T]the pamphlet attempts to describe ‘Whiteness,’ as ‘A broad societal construct that includes white culture, history, ideology, racism, expression, experience, epistemology, emotion and behavior,’ the lawmaker said.
“NSA is an intelligence organization that tries to learn facts and provide analysis to make decisions. What epistemology, specifically, does the NSA consider ‘white?’” they ask. “Do your employees agree? How does this change their work?”

GOP lawmakers also asked whether the definition of “capitalism” as “an economic and political order that relies on a predominantly private and unequal market system of production and consumption” reflected the agency’s official view.
“Since the United States waged the Cold War to preserve a free capitalist society, when did the NSA officially accept this view?” they asked.
The pair also investigated whether the definitions of “structural racism” and “equity” — the latter of which has been accepted by President Biden and his administration — mean that “disparate treatment based on race” is “practiced within the NSA.”
Waltz and Banks further ask about the definition of “neocolonialism” as the domination of “former colonies in Asia, Africa, and the Americas” through “political, economic, social, military, or technical power, generally disguised as aid or humanitarian assistance.”

“Some of these definitions seem to merge into a concept that could endanger national security,” they said of the term. “Is this the official policy of the US towards countries in the developing world? If so, which one?”
They also questioned intelligence agencies about whether the marking on the file, “P65,” indicated it was internally cataloged and approved.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) called out the NSA on his podcast for pushing a “load of bigoted and insane nonsense” with the glossary — and potentially threatening US citizens’ personal lines of communication.
“Imagine the NSA intercepting your text messages and flagging … any material deemed to support ‘extremist’ beliefs, such as ‘there are only two sexes,’ or ‘I am not sorry that my ancestors created Western civilization.’ Maybe they’re already doing this,” Gaetz said last Thursday on an episode of “Firebrand.”
“What else do they keep a glossary like this for?” he asked.
A representative for the NSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
