How Alex Murdaugh almost got away with everything: new book

When reporter Mandy Matney begins investigating Alex Murdaugh’s life and crimes, she knows it won’t be easy.

But, as he writes in “Blood On Their Hands – The Fall of the Murdaugh Dynasty and the System That Protected Them”(William Morrow), the experience also revealed a world where certain privileges and interests did their best to prevent him from getting the truth.

“Powerful, white, male lawyers like Alex Murdaugh have built the system themselves so they can get away with anything,” he said. “And for decades — centuries, even — they have.”

But Murdaugh seems to have earned his due.

On March 3, a South Carolina lawyer was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole, for killing his wife, Maggie, and their 22-year-old son, Paul, in June 2021.

The case captured the public’s imagination and received global media coverage but “every hot item was a reminder of the inherent bias in Alex Murdaugh’s favor: no one wanted to believe that a man like him – a rich old man, white, and had the privilege — to be able to commit such a horrific crime,” wrote Matney, who has a popular podcast about the case, “‘The Murdaugh Murder Podcast.’

Mandy Matney had a popular podcast about the Murdaugh case, now she has a book.

A murder trial is not the end.

Recently, Murdaugh’s defense team filed a motion for a new trial, alleging jury tampering in the original trial.

Later this month, Murdaugh will also be tried on a variety of financial crimes ranging from money laundering to stealing more than $8 million from his clients.

One interviewee, whom Matney called ‘Blair’, was very close to the Murders, describing them “as if they were the Mafia. Like when you’re in the inner circle, it’s almost impossible to get out even though you can see the chaos and lawlessness going around … A large part of the Murdaughs’ influence and reach is the way they stay above the law.”
