Model Paulina Porizkova is getting more candid about forgiveness as she reflects on the passing of her late husband, Ric Ocasek.
The Cars singer and the Czech-born model were married from 1989 until his sudden death following surgery in 2019. The “Anna” actress, who shared two sons with the musician, was shocked to learn that she had been cut from his will before he passed.
Although he later reached a settlement with his estate, the incident left him questioning many things about their relationship, and, as he wrote in his latest Instagram post, about the power of forgiveness.

On Thursday morning, the author of “No Filter: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful” took to Instagram to write a poignant post about forgiveness. “I’m now often asked how I forgive,” he began. “How can I not be bitter about what happened. How did I manage to continue?”
“Almost four years ago, my husband died. He did not inherit me in his will after 30 years of marriage, while I was nursing him back to health,” he explained. “Every day we would kiss each other chastely goodnight and retire to separate bedrooms, as we had done for three years. We have separated and will begin divorce proceedings as soon as he is well.”
“I have fallen in love with another person, who left me while I was still drowning in grief for my husband, because (in his own words) he did not have the fortitude to stay with me. Oh, and Covid is raging. All this was almost three years ago,” he revealed. “So, how did I get back on my feet? It is a matter of survival.”

“I was left bleeding on the battlefield. At first, I could only evoke pain and guilt. I can shield myself against the world so no one can hurt me again. But that also means I’ll be stewing in my own little carapace,” he admits. “I will be alone forever with my pain. I will be a victim of my circumstances and my own inability to get out.”
“Or I can fight. Throw away my broken armor, stand up and fight with only my knowledge and the courage to be knocked down time and time again. We will all face adversity at some point in our lives. We cannot choose it or let it go. The only thing we CAN choose is how we deal with it,” he concluded. “You can be a victim – or a hero.”

Paulina’s words really resonated with her followers. Widowed mother Amy Gabrielle commented, “There are times to step back and lick our wounds, but ultimately, we can only control our thoughts, our feelings and our actions.”
“We have the ability to reframe painful situations as opportunities for growth and evolution. Our thoughts guide our actions, heighten our emotions and shape our new realities, even ones we never chose for ourselves,” he continued. “I see this as a growth mindset, something that is available to everyone through various therapeutic modalities. Cognitive behavioral therapy was amazing for me, even before my husband was diagnosed and died of cancer.”

“Forgiveness is a hard pill to swallow sometimes. It often takes a while to swallow especially as we get older but sometimes it’s quicker when our wisdom kicks in. I know for me there were some things in my youth that were difficult to resolve. Letting go sometimes frees the soul,” shared another follower.
“I’m just trying to understand because I’ve been following you for a while and I think you’re great … you’re saying that he cut you out of his will but he left the money to his sons and you’re their mother and apparently you’re worth $10 million. Why not grieve privately and then rise from the ashes like a Phoenix? It seems like a lot of your self-worth is based on looks and posing and modeling. Maybe take some time and step out of the spotlight and enjoy this new relationship in person,” another user commented.

Paulina did not respond to the comment, but many fans did. “Everyone’s journey is different. I’m sure many find it helpful to hear how others have navigated the diversity, especially someone known as Paulina,” another follower replied. “I’ve been with him the whole way and it’s been great to see because he’s literally bounced back. So grateful that he has shared all of this and given hope and inspiration to so many of us.”
More fans went on to thank him for being a hero with other followers adding, “You are so graceful in your honesty. Thanks for being real.”
