Ilhan Omar falsely claims photo is of dead Palestinian kids

Congressional “Squad” member and staunch Palestinian advocate, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was widely criticized this weekend for reposting a photo of a dead child killed in a 2013 Syrian chemical weapons attack with the caption “CHILD GENOCIDE IN PALESTIN.”

X Omar’s appalling and false post on Saturday came after fellow Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D – NY) warned the public about the “extremely high level of misinformation” in all directions on the platform regarding the Israel-Hamas war.

“If you see a claim, photo or video that triggers a strong emotional reaction, take a moment to pause and check the truth/verification from multiple sources,” a New York City lawmaker wrote last week in a plea for caution.

Israel’s Public Affairs Committee called the two congressmen by name on X when it shared a screenshot of Omar’s graphic fake news message, which has since not been reposted amid widespread consternation, as first reported by Mediaite Saturday.

“You mean this, @AOC?” AIPAC wrote. “@IlhanMN is spreading dangerous misinformation, blaming Israel for killing children killed by Assad in Syria 10 years ago.”

“Once again, the Squad did not let the facts get in the way of their anti-Israel narrative,” the political action committee said.

X has added a community note to the post explaining that it features a photo that was widely published after the sarin gas attack launched by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war in Ghouta ten years ago.

“This photo is NOT from Gaza/Palestine,” the platform said. The horrific attack described has killed “more than 1,400 Syrians, many of them children,” according to the US State Department.

Some 724 Palestinian children have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza strip since Hamas militants launched a coordinated terror attack targeting civilians across the disputed border on October 7, killing more than 1,300, Defense for Children International said Saturday.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Sunday that a total of 2,670 Palestinians have been killed and 9,600 wounded since Israel declared war and launched retaliatory attacks on military targets in the northern part of the disputed territory, as Israel urged up to 1.1 million civilians to flee south to avoid more a lot of bloodshed.

Fox News commentator Guy Benson explained on the network’s “The Big Weekend Show” why it was reckless and irresponsible to include the atrocity.

“This is the sad part. Palestinian children have already been killed. More Palestinian children will be killed in the coming days,” Benson said Sunday.

“Fighting the fog of war, it’s important when we get that report, confirmed or otherwise when that happens, is that Israel is trying hard to avoid it, while Hamas is trying hard to kill innocent people.”

Omar has not issued any comment or apology for his fiery repost of X, in which he reposted content over the weekend accusing Israel of “war crimes” and violating “international humanitarian law” in connection with its evacuation order, an opinion shared by the Organization United Nations. ‘ leading human rights arm and Amnesty International as the crisis worsens.
