Indiana council candidate dies after collapsing at polling station

An Indiana city leader died on Election Day after suddenly collapsing while greeting voters at a polling place.

David “Red” Worrall, 59, of Clarksville, died at a hospital Tuesday, shortly after being rushed there following an apparent medical emergency at the Renaissance Academy polling station, WDRB reported.

At the time of his death, Worrall was an At-Large candidate for city council.

He was posthumously ranked third, the outlet said.

Worrall, a Republican, previously served one term as Clarksville’s District 3 City Councilman, and later resigned to address health issues, according to PEOPLE.

“I’ve been approached by several groups of people who want me to try and get back in,” the auto repair shop owner and Clarksville native said in his official candidate biography of the decision to re-enter local politics.

The Town of Clarksville issued a statement of condolence on his death.

“It is with a heavy heart that we extend our condolences to the family and friends of David ‘Red’ Worrall, who passed away earlier this evening,” city officials said. said on X Tuesday afternoon.

“A former Clarksville City Council member and current At-Large candidate, David’s dedication to our community is truly commendable,” the statement continued.

“We will never forget his passion for public service and his unwavering desire to create positive change in our City. Daud’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and the community he sought to serve.”

According to his candidate page, Worrall has lived in Clarksville his entire life.

Other local politicians shared their condolences on social media.

“Yesterday is still a blur in my mind. While working on the poll with family and friends of both parties, we were reminded of how fragile life is,” added the Democratic Councilman-elect in his profile.
