In a new interview with Total Film Magazine, director James Mangold not only confirmed that the scene made it into the final cut of the film, but that it was about 25 minutes long!

The film brought Ford down to about the age he was in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which hit theaters in 1981. It was the first entry in the “Indiana Jones” franchise, closely followed by 1984’s “Temple of Doom.” Last Crusade” 1989 and “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” 2008.

Mangold said that despite his advanced age, Ford was “very talented and agile” while filming the scene, which made it easy for him to “pretend to be 35.” However, Mangold also credits the new VFX technology created specifically for the film to remove Ford’s age.

“But the technology involved is another matter,” Mangold told the magazine. “We have hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-up, in medium, in wide, in every kind of lighting, night and day. I can shoot Harrison on Monday because, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35-year-old, and I can look at the dailies on Wednesday with his head replaced.”

“It’s not a year of trying to get the first pass,” Mangold continued. “It’s incredible technology, and, in many ways, I didn’t think about it. I just focus on shooting what [approximately] a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to let it rip. The goal is to give viewers a full-bodied sense of what they’re missing. Because when the movie was released in 1969, they had to make adjustments to the current situation, which is different than before.”

In February 2023, Ford appeared on “The Late Show” and told host Stephen Colbert that the ageless face in the movie was actually his real face. He explained how Lucasfilm combed through old footage of the actor from his previous roles in “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” to create his younger self.

“They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns,” Ford said. “Because I made a lot of films for them, they have all this footage, including out-of-print films. So they can mine it from where the light comes from, from that expression.”

“I don’t know how they do it. But that’s my real face,” continued Ford. “Then I put little dots on my face and I say words and they make [it]. It’s great.”

Additionally, the “What Lies Beneath” actress told Empire that seeing herself age was “a little creepy,” adding, “It’s the first time I’ve seen it where I believe … I don’t think I want to know how it works, but it works. It doesn’t make me want to be young. I’m glad I’ve reached my age.”

While he’s happy to have come of age, there won’t be any jokes about it in the new film. In a February 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford admitted “There are a lot of old jokes in the script.” However, he quickly added, “We removed them all.”

“There was a moment where he looked at himself in this situation and said, ‘What am I doing here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about stories.’ I want to see a situation where the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the nose with the highlights shown to them,” added Ford. “I’d rather create behavior that is a come-of-age joke than talk about it.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also spoke to Empire about the technology, saying, “My hope is that, even though it’s going to be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and say, ‘Oh my God, they just found footage. This is what they shot 40 last year.’”

“We take you on an adventure, something that Indy is looking for, and immediately you have the feeling of, ‘I’m in an Indiana Jones movie,'” he added.
