Indiana man who accidentally recorded voicemail of himself killing mom’s boyfriend sentenced to 85 years

An Indiana man is locked up in his own 85-year sentence after accidentally recording the murder of his mother’s boyfriend in a voicemail.

Cody Allen Wade, 33, was sentenced to death on Wednesday, after he was found guilty last month in the 2020 murder of Carl Haviland.

Wade had left a voicemail on his mother’s phone in the moments before he stabbed Haviland four times, but failed to hang up the phone before carrying out the attack.

Her mother was also present to witness her son kill her boyfriend.

“The defendant repeatedly stabbed Carl Haviland not only in front of the defendant’s own mother but did so despite her efforts to physically prevent him from committing the crime,” the judge wrote in the sentencing order obtained by PEOPLE.

After stabbing Haviland, Wade kicked and taunted his victim.

The killer planned his crime in advance, prosecutors said.

Wade left the cookout and headed to his mother’s home in Brazil, a town 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis, stopping along the way at another man’s house to say he was going to kill someone, documents state.

At the time, he was on parole for arson. He was released from prison in March 2020, just two months before the murder.

He was sentenced to 60 years for the murder with an additional 15 years added since he was found to be a habitual offender.

Wade was also given 10 years for two separate counts of felony battery on an injured public safety officer and was given concurrent sentences for three other counts: felony battery on a public safety officer and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, according to county records.

Wade will receive credit for the days he has served in prison.
