An Insta-famous plastic surgeon who promised to make clients’ butts “pop” instead allegedly botched procedures that led to scarring or infection in California, according to dozens of former patients.
Dr. Arian Mowlavi, known as Dr. Laguna with more than 80,000 social media followers, charged thousands of dollars for several surgeries, only to leave patients with various problems following the work done on them by the doctor’s business, according to various malpractice lawsuits against him and recently reported by Los Angeles Times.
Mowlavi demanded that his patients strip completely for exams and touch their bodies without permission, and in some cases asked unlicensed technicians to do some work, the newspaper reported, citing court documents.
He also posted pictures and videos of their bodies online without their consent, the documents allege.
“Dr. Mowlavi is a danger to society and his plastic surgery patients,” Dr. Robert Kachenmeister, a California-based physician who treated several of Mowlavi’s post-surgery patients, reportedly wrote in a court declaration filed by the court.

Mowlavi would boast about his craft in numerous videos posted on social media.
In one clip cited by the LA Times, he says “We’re making some beautiful butts, so come with me” as he shows an unconscious patient face down on an operating table with his back open.
“This butt has volume, pop,” he said cheerfully. “This is what we’re talking about guys.”
He has denied allegations of wrongdoing, arguing in court filings that the patient was aware of and bore the risks from the surgery, the LA Times reported.
The California Medical Board filed formal charges against Mowlavi in 2021 alleging several violations. The following year the board suspended his license for 90 days and slapped him with 10 years of probation, the outlet reported.
He reportedly pleaded not guilty but accepted the verdict.
A patient of Mowlavi’s died in 2018 days after undergoing surgery for liposuction, breast implants and other work, the LA Times reported.

Irlanda Swarthout passed out and was rushed to the emergency room five hours after the procedure, according to the state medical board.
He suffered shortness of breath before collapsing at home and died three days later of internal bleeding that stopped his heart, the board reported.
His family sued in 2019 and then the medical board filed charges against him alleging he allowed surgical technicians to work on patients.
The surgeon reached a $1 million settlement with his family and did not contest the board’s charges, according to the LA Times.
Another patient, social media influencer Chalene Johnson, made public allegations detailing her “plastic surgery nightmare” with Mowlavi.
While others began contacting Johnson about their problems with the doctor, Mowlavi sued him for defamation, the LA Times reported, insisting he received proper care.
More than 20 patients reportedly sued Mowlavi in December 2021 because they said he put their photos online without their permission. One patient said he was even insulted during the video he posted.
“This woman has no magic, no pop, has a square masculine shape,” Mowlavi said before showing off her post-surgery body, according to court records reviewed by the LA Times.
He has pushed for a stay in most of the lawsuits involving him after he files for bankruptcy in 2022.
The unaffiliated doctor also faces a lawsuit from the Orange County District Attorney’s office over alleged illegal and unfair business practices, and an ongoing criminal investigation.
