Iowa mom loses legs, needs facial reconstruction surgery after being mauled by three pit bulls: family

An Iowa mother lost both her legs, part of her arm and will need facial reconstruction surgery after she was mauled by three pit bulls last week, her family said.

The dogs pounced on Brittany Skoland around 11:30 a.m. Nov. 24 outside her home in Fort Dodge, a city 100 miles northwest of Des Moines.

Police were called after a neighbor reported hearing “someone screaming for help.”

“The officer tried to scare the dogs to stop them from attacking the woman, but the dogs did not stop,” Chief Dennis Quinn said in a statement.

With no other choice, the officer opened fire on the animals, killing all three.

Skoland was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved so severe that he was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, known for its certified adult trauma center.

“Brittany has lost more than we thought, She has had many surgeries and procedures in the last few days,” wrote her aunt Teresa Hanus in an online fundraiser.

“He had both his legs amputated up to the knees and his arms. He will need facial reconstruction surgery, he also has serious head trauma and more.”

The devastated family plans to use the funds raised to make Skoland’s home wheelchair accessible.

“If you know Brittany, you know her life is outside doing yard work, helping her mom decorate for the holidays, and walking/playing with her younger kids,” Skoland’s friend Jayden Louise Johnson wrote on Facebook.

Police are still investigating the abuse, but have not filed any charges.

While some shocked neighbors say pit bulls are usually obedient to their owners, others claim they’ve had problems with the dog in the past.

A resident told KCCI that it took several rounds to finally subdue the attacking animal.

“I was sitting in my living room, and I was just sitting there and all of a sudden I heard a bang, and I came to the door and I saw all the police, there was only one at the time, and I saw the woman lying on ground and the dogs went at him and the police shot them. And it took a few shots to bring them down,” said Rosemary Possehn.
