In his cover story for Harper’s Bazaar’s latest release, Shayk talks about learning to love her imperfections following the birth of her daughter, six-year-old Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper, who she shares with actor Bradley Cooper.

She said, “My daughter is a big part of why I started loving myself. He would say, ‘I love Dad so much, I love Mama so much, I love Nana, I love Babulya—’ who is my mother. Then he said, ‘And I love myself very much.’ And I looked at my daughter and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m not like that in six years sold…’”

Knowing how impressionable children can be in this age of social media, Shayk said she’s teaching her daughter to have values ​​that don’t center on superficial things like “putting on a mask, putting on makeup, brushing your hair, putting on nice clothes.”

Shayk shared, “She never wears makeup and will use this stuff from the fridge, like strawberries or cucumbers, for her face. She’s always so positive and grateful for every day and like, ‘Always be yourself. Be kind to people.’ That is true beauty.”

She said, “Sometimes I wake up and I feel cute and I think, ‘Oh, should I put these pictures on social media?’ A voice said, ‘Oh, but people will say, ‘You’re a mother.’ And I was like, ‘But what does that mean?’”

Teaching from her grandmother and daughter helped Shayk develop a tough skin, which she says helped her deal with naysayers during her early modeling career.

She remembers hearing statements like “Oh my God, she doesn’t look like a model. She’s not skinny, she’s too sexy, she’ll never be a model” but never thought about it.

“I have no time for people’s opinions. Why should I click and read 2,000 reviews? I’m pretty independent from him,” says Shayk, noting that balancing her parental responsibilities with her career takes up all of her time.

Shayk went on to state that the solution does not lie in going for a quick face, saying that one needs to figure out what is wrong within oneself.

The model said, “It’s not about how you look on the outside; it is what is inside you. It’s how I reconnect with myself and try to feel connected and united inside. And that’s what I think is beautiful on the outside too.”
