The 12-year-old Israeli girl whose “Harry Potter”-inspired photo went viral after she was kidnapped by Hamas has been found dead with her grandmother in Gaza.
Noya Dan and her grandmother, Carmela Dan, were found dead somewhere in Gaza by the Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday, according to Carmela’s niece, Abbey Onn.
“There was an operation by the Israeli army a few days ago at this point to get the body, and we believe that they took the time to run what we know to be three DNA tests and to identify that it was both,” Onn said. NBC News’ Lester Holt.
Carmela would have turned 80 on Tuesday.
Her relatives in Israel organized a birthday celebration for the woman less than 24 hours before learning of her death.
When Carmela disappeared from her home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 with her granddaughter, who had gone there for the night, the family assumed the two had been taken hostage.

Onn said Thursday the fact that they were found across the Israel-Gaza border may point to that conclusion, but it remains to be seen.
Noya emerged as a symbol of the plight of Israeli children targeted by Hamas after the official social media accounts of the State of Israel share the photo wearing a Gryffindor tie and clutching a walking stick and a Hebrew copy of “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.”
The image has been viewed more than 26 million times.

“This beautiful 12-year-old girl with autism was kidnapped from her home by Hamas terrorists and taken to Gaza,” the caption accompanying the photo read on X, previously on Twitter.

“Noya, sensitive, kind, funny and a huge Harry Potter fan,” the message continued, before appealing to JK Rowing, author of the “Harry Potter” book series, to help share the 12-year-old’s story.
Rowling immediately retweeted the post, wrote in a message to his 14 million followers: “Child abduction is despicable and absolutely unacceptable. For obvious reasons, this picture caught my eye. May Noya and all the hostages taken by Hamas be returned soon, safely, to their families.”

Before Noya was taken from his grandmother’s house, he left his mother, Galit, a final voicemail, in which she described hearing a loud explosion, reported Israeli network Kan Hadashot on Tuesday.

“All the windows in grandma’s house broke, at the entrance, because there was another explosion,” Noya can be heard saying in Hebrew, before moaning the words, “Mama.”

Galit said he received the last text message from his daughter around 12:30pm local time on October 7.
He did not find out what happened at Kibbutz Nir Oz until 4 a.m. the next morning, when his sister told him that Noya, his mother, and his sister’s own sons, Sahar and Erez Kalderon, had been taken.
“What did they do with him?” Galit said through tears, referring to his son Noya. “I hope they are together. I pray.”
