At the end of the competition, Eve Gilles from Nord-Pas-de-Calais became the first pixie cut-wearing winner in the competition’s history. Declaring her win a victory for “diversity,” the 20-year-old emphasized her androgynous look, challenging beauty standards.
In front of 7.5 million viewers, each Daily Mail, she emphatically stated, “We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair. No one should define who you are.”
She celebrates uniqueness and calls for acceptance of various expressions of femininity, adding that every “woman is different, we are all unique.”

However, after Gilles was crowned, the 2024 Queen of France pageant faced an overwhelming backlash and was labeled as “woke”. The pageant, which is known for traditionally favoring contestants with long, curvy hair, has been criticized for choosing the “androgynous” Gilles with his pixie cut.

Others questioned her alignment with traditional Miss France standards, noting that she “doesn’t look like Miss France.” Another added: “We don’t care about her haircut, but the androgynous body is clearly there to serve as a wake.”
French Politicians Show Their ‘Big Support’ For Miss France Eve Gilles
Despite the criticism, many celebrated Gilles’ selection as Miss France 2024, highlighting her connection to the French tradition of short-haired fashion icons such as Mistinguett and Coco Chanel.
Supportive voices on social media defended Gilles against accusations of promoting “wokeism,” with one fan writing: “Maybe the new #MissFrance is not beautiful in your eyes, but see wokeism in her because she has short hair…. It’s just silly.”
Another user slammed transphobic remarks related to her appearance, stating: “Eve Gilles is not transphobic, never claimed to be transphobic, but half the comments about her are transphobic because she has short hair.”

Eve Gilles Wants To Show Women They Don’t Have To Be Put In A Box
Ahead of the 2024 Queen of France pageant, Gilles, who hails from Réunion, France’s overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, is actively campaigning for “diverse” beauty standards.
The competition, often criticized for being sexist, became a platform for Gilles to support the growing representation of women in society.
During the final, Gillies, per Telegraphboldly stated: “I want to show that the competition is growing and so is society, that the representation of women is diverse, in my opinion beauty is not limited to the haircut or the shape we have … or not.”
Earlier in November, Gilles, in an interview with a French news channel BFM Grand Lille, expressed her desire to challenge traditional norms, stating, “I especially want to defend the image of women, that they can do what they want, that they can be whatever she likes.”
“I want to crack the code,” he added. “To show that women can be diverse, that we don’t have to be put in a box. That’s what I want to show.”
