An Israeli mother who fled after Hamas terrorists stormed her home says her newborn baby went 27 hours without formula while they waited to be rescued.
Shaylee Atary said that when she and her 1-month-old daughter, Shayla, were rescued and taken to the hospital, the newborn was so dehydrated that she did not shed tears when she cried.
Atary was preparing to feed Shayla early Saturday when a bomb fell outside the Kfar Aza home she shared with her husband.
“I think it’s a regular bombing that we have, like every few months,” Atary told PBS. “But then we understood it was bigger.”
The couple soon heard people shouting “Come, come” in Arabic, and moments later, the attacker opened the window to their bedroom.
“So I took my daughter, a 1-month-old daughter, without shoes, without a phone. My husband was left there with many people who wanted to kill him possibly,” she said.
Atary ran behind a bush, trying to hide as Hamas gunmen shot at them, and finally found an empty flower pot that he turned into a helmet for them.

While hiding in the barn, Shayla begins to cry, prompting Atary to run off again to find help.
“But then a family, actually, they saved me. They are the only ones who open. They have cameras around the house. And they could see I wasn’t one of them [terrorists]. So they can see I’m pregnant. They opened a house with a child. And we were in that house for 27 hours,” said Atary.
“They bombed [for] 27 hours and they are still bombing now,” he added.

Atary recalls how difficult it was to keep her young daughter calm during the horrific incident, where she felt like there was a target on her back every time her daughter started crying.
By the time they were found over a day later, Shayla had turned a hideous white. At the hospital, the doctor told his mother he was severely dehydrated.
Now, days after the horrific invasion, Atary’s husband of more than 10 years, Yahav Winner, is still missing.

Winner, an Israeli filmmaker, had feather-colored tattoos, brown hair and blue eyes, his wife told the outlet, adding that none of the bodies they found were his.
“We had a lot of bodies — and they didn’t find them. I do not know. Like, right now, I really hope he gets kidnapped to Gaza. I know it doesn’t sound like a big hope. But if I think about those hours – since the bombing, it was too much time for him to survive,” said Atary. “So, I hope she’s kidnapped, I hope so, right?”
