An Italian winemaker reportedly drowned in a wine barrel after becoming dizzy from nitrogen gas and falling into the fermenting brew while trying to rescue a colleague.
Marco Bettolini, 46, was reaching for his colleague Alberto Pin, 31, when he lost his balance after being overcome with dizziness from intoxicating fumes released during the winemaking process on Thursday, The Telegraph reported.
It is believed that Pin entered the cask autoclave at the Ca’ winery in Rajo in north-east Italy at around 2pm, after realizing the tap was not working and fell ill from the fumes.
Bettolini follows him to help and is attacked by the smoke himself.
Bettolini fell several feet and hit his head at the bottom, where some wine was still there, according to local newspaper Tribuna di Treviso.

“We are overcome with sadness. For us, these are two brothers, two sons. My thoughts go to these two men, who grew up with us, and to their families,” said winery owner Simone Cecchetto, to Tribuna di Treviso. “We pray for the injured young man, that he recovers quickly.”
Bettolini has been working for the company since 2018 and is the winemaker and cellar manager, reported Wine News.
“He was a great worker, a very generous and quiet person,” said a colleague, according to La Repubblica.

The experienced oenologist also works as a consultant for various wine companies, and also works as an agronomist, specializing in soil management and crop production, according to his LinkedIn.
Veneto President Luca Zaia paid tribute to the two workers, telling the Tribuna di Treviso: “Why today? Why so much pain to those who really don’t deserve it? I offer my condolences to the families who have been devastated by this tragedy and to all who loved and knew the victims and who are now worried about their colleagues who are being treated in hospital.”
The incident is under investigation and no one has been charged, although it has raised concerns about production safety in the Italian wine industry.
