Who Are Jamal Edwards Family Members?
Jamal Edwards, a pioneering figure in the British Music industry, died in February 2022. He is survived by his mother Brenda Edwards and sister Tanisha Edwards.
Based on his Facebook, he is also very close to his mother’s side of the family. In December 2020, Jamal shared about his maternal grandparents who died in a car accident when his mother was only 4 years old at the time.
He added, “I hope they can see all of us now, having come from humble beginnings in St Vincent & The Grenadines, they might be quite proud of what we have all achieved. Their stories & not being able to meet them in person is part of the reason I feel so connected to a country I’ve never visited before, so I thought I’d change that”.
Brenda his mother needs no introduction. She is best known as a panelist on the TV show “Loose Women”. But, when Brenda was diagnosed with cancer, it troubled Jamal. He shared in an interview, “My mother [ X Factor star Brenda Edwards] diagnosed with breast cancer. I don’t know how to deal with it. One of the things he took from me was my confidence and positivity. That helped him through. But for me, that positivity left me.
He further added, “They found cancer in the last stage, he lost his hair and my head all over as a result. But he smiled through it. He is in remission now. She joined Loose Women and was involved in the Sister Act 2 tour. Life has changed now. I learned that when it rains outside it can be sunny inside your brain.”
Jamal Edwards’ biological father
Jamal Edwards never knew his biological father. But, he has talked about his father on his Twitter.
In June 2013, Jamal tweeted, “Unfortunately I see so many posts about people’s fathers not being there for them…”. It was followed by another tweet, “..if you’re a new dad, make sure you’re there for your kids & don’t act like you’re a stereotypical statistic that isn’t there.”
Later, he spoke about his biological father, “I don’t know where my real father is or know who he is, one day it might be good to find out what happened but I love my stepfather..”
But, his desire to know about his biological father may not happen at the time of his death. This tweet from 2013 was the only time Jamal contacted his father.
But, several news outlets reported that his father had a brief relationship with his mother Brenda when she was pregnant at the age of 20.
Who Is Jamal Edwards’ Stepfather?
Jamal Edwards however has a father figure in his life. He was raised by his stepfather Patrick Edwards. His stepfather worked as a mortgage broker who provided him with cameras and equipment in his early days of experimentation.
Brenda Edwards married Patrick Edwards in 1996. He came into Brenda’s life when Jamal was just five years old. Jamal respects and loves his stepfather. In 2012, he wrote, “I wake up in the morning with the motivation to make this SBTV a success so my mom/dad won’t have to work another day in their life.”
But, the relationship started to become abusive years later.
Brenda also spoke about the abusive nature of the relationship in September 2020 during an emotional interview on the Today show. She spoke of fearing for her life when she was punched in the face and threatened with a knife, two years after she fled her abusive boyfriend. She revealed that she would “blame herself” for her partner’s violent and manipulative behaviour, but ended up leaving her boyfriend after he strangled her over a ‘missing apple pie’.
Brenda did not disclose the abuse to her family because it would have made things worse. He plans to run away with his best friend. After a brief scuffle between her and her friend and Patrick, they exited. Jamal’s mother disappeared for two years and thought she was rebuilding her house until her partner showed up unannounced.
Brenda also reveals that Patrick has become a completely different man than someone she had fallen in love with.
