James Cameron Dunks On Marvel And DC Characters For Acting Like ‘College’ Kids

There is no love lost between James Cameron and the Marvel and DC universes. The “Avatar” director is gearing up to release “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the sequel to the 2009 film.

In addition to original actors such as Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, Kate Winslet will also make an appearance in the film as Ronal, the leader of the Metkayina, a little-known Na’vi tribe.

The director recently spoke about the film and mentioned the DC universe and Marvel characters as people who behave like college students. Cameron claimed they lacked depth and the way they were created was not the right way to make a movie.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Cameron shed light on how cinema has evolved over the years and called out Marvel and DC characters, claiming they lacked depth. The filmmaker is the brains behind famous movies like “Titanic” and “Avatar.” He also directed the upcoming sci-fi/action sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

“When I look at these big, big movies — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — no matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college,” the director said. “They have a relationship, but they really don’t. They never cover their spurs because of their children.”

According to Cameron, the superhero character has no experience with intense feelings. “The thing that truly grounds us and gives us power, love, and purpose?” he continued. “The characters don’t experience that, and I think that’s not the way to make a movie.”

Three years earlier, “The Wolf of Wall Street” director Martin Scorsese made similar comments to Cameron. The legendary filmmaker spoke to him Empire Magazine and revealed that he was trying to watch a superhero movie; however, they didn’t click with it.

Scorsese said he didn’t think of it as cinema and described it as a “theme park.” “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” said the director. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made, with the actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is a theme park.”

He continued, “It is not human cinema that tries to convey an emotional, psychological experience to another human being.” James Gunn, the former director of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” responded to Scorsese and revealed that he was “saddened” by the words of the “Shutter Island” director.

Cameron’s next film project is the sequel to his 2009 work, “Avatar.” The long-awaited sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” will reportedly hit theaters in mid-December this year. The first film follows Worthington’s character, Jake, who is a former marine.

In the film, Jake participates in Na’vi culture and falls in love with Saldaña’s character, Neytiri. The new film will take place around 15 years from the events of the 2009 film and feature an older Jake and Neytiri with their three children and their adopted child.

“In the first movie, Sam’s character jumps out of his flying creature and basically changes the course of history because of this crazy, almost suicidal leap of faith,” Cameron explained.

“Zoe’s character jumps off a limb and thinks there’s going to be some nice big leaves down there that can hold her fall,” the director continued. “But when you’re a parent, you don’t think like that. So for me, as a parent of five children, I said, ‘What happens when the characters mature and realize that they have responsibilities beyond their own survival?’

‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Filmed Underwater

According to Cameron, several scenes of “Avatar: The Way of Water” were shot underwater instead of using CGI technology like “Aquaman.” The director was asked why he did that, and he revealed it was because “it looks good.”

“Oh, I don’t know, maybe it looks good?” Cameron said to The Time. “Come on! You want it to look like people underwater, so they need to be underwater. It’s not a big leap — if you’re westernizing, you’re going out learning how to ride a horse.”

The actors had to train with the help of breathing experts so that they could hold their breath underwater for longer. Cameron explained, “I know Sam is a surfer, but Sigourney and Zoe and the others are not ocean-oriented people. So I was very specific about what was needed, and we got the world’s best breath-holding experts to talk about it.”
