At the recent African American Film Critics Association annual luncheon, Jamie Foxx joked about his recent health scare in his award acceptance speech, insinuating that he was “dying.”
During his acceptance speech, Foxx also revealed that he plans to tackle health issues with humor and on stage in a stand-up project.
Since his recovery, the actor has made several public appearances, including a big comeback at the Critics’ Choice Awards, where he was presented with the Vanguard Award.

Foxx was among the many celebrity guests at the recent annual African American Film Critics Association luncheon, held at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. At the event, he was awarded the AAFCA Producer Award and gave a moving acceptance speech.
During the speech, Foxx interspersed a light-hearted joke about his severe health scare, which left him hospitalized for months last year.
He shares that a mysterious health emergency has made him appreciate some of the daily pleasures of life that people take advantage of. He even joked about how he actually “died” while fighting for his life at the time.
Foxx said, “Cherish life, man. I have a few people in my life that really keep me here because it’s been a struggle. So I rate, I tell you. My daughter thinks I’m too grateful sometimes, these days. Because I am very grateful.”
“I was drinking water, ‘Wow, have you tasted this water? It was so wet! This is the wettest water. Is it like this before I die?’” the actor joked, according to a news outlet.

Foxx previously addressed his health issues during his appearance at the Critics’ Choice Cinema and Television Society Celebration: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievement. At the ceremony, Foxx was presented with a Vanguard Award for his performance in Amazon Prime Video’s “The Burial.”
At the time, Foxx said the disease left him unable to walk for a while after leaving the hospital. The “Django Unchained” star added: “I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough.”
Foxx’s medical issues began in April when his daughter, Corinne Foxx, revealed to the world that she was receiving treatment at the hospital after an undisclosed medical emergency.
A few weeks later, Corinne shared an update that Foxx had been released and was recovering well. The actor was later seen playing pickles and then went on a boat cruise. He was also confirmed to be receiving treatment at a rehabilitation center in Chicago.
Due to the mystery surrounding his health scare, there have been rumors about Foxx’s well-being. To dispel the rumors, Foxx released an Instagram video about the effects of the medical emergency on his body. The actor confirmed he is not paralyzed or blind and even joked that his vision is “fine.”

At the AAFCA event, he said, per Diversity: “Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’ll tell you what happened. But I have to do it my way. I will do it in a funny way. We will be on stage. We will return to the roots of standing alone.”
Foxx went on to state that the stand-up project will be titled “What Had Happened Was” and will have all the exciting details the world has been waiting for.
The actor also teased that the stand-up show will address all the rumors circulating about him after the health scare, including that he was cloned and replaced.
Foxx will also co-host Fox’s “Beat Shazam” with Corinne, a project he previously dropped amid news of his medical crisis.

While celebrating her NAACP Image Award nomination in January, Foxx took the opportunity to express how happy she is to have survived her health scare.
The NAACP Image Awards, which celebrate the achievements of people of color in the arts and entertainment industries, recognized Foxx’s contributions with nominations in three separate categories: Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for “The Burial,” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for “They Cloned Tyrone,” and Motion Picture Outstanding Free for “Story Ave.”
“So grateful to @naacpimageawards for this nomination,” Foxx wrote on Instagram about the award. “I can’t tell you how great it feels to be recognized by ourselves … and a big thank you to @datariturner your vision and your diligence to complete all our projects with the best expertise and execution is nothing short of amazing.”
The “Day Shift” actress later expressed how grateful she is for her “second chance” at life after her mysterious health scare left her hospitalized for months.
“And personally, I feel humbled and grateful to God that I got a second chance to enjoy and appreciate life …,” he wrote, tagging his daughter, Corinne, and younger sister, Deidra Dixon.
