On Sunday, France’s Ministry of Culture confirmed the death of Jane Birkin at the age of 76, with a tweet referring to her as an “immortal icon of the French language.”
At the time, the cause of his death was still undisclosed, but according to ABC News, the British-born French icon known for the song “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” has been battling health issues such as a stroke in 2021 and a broken shoulder blade earlier this year, which has hampered his performances and public appearances.
Born in London in December 1946 to Judy Campbell and David Birkin, Birkin rose to fame and made France her lifelong home when she moved to Paris at age 20 to work on the movie “Slogan.”

Although of British origin, the Birkin became a fashion icon in France in the 1960s and 70s, notably inspiring the creation of the famous Birkin bag by luxury design house Hermès.
During an Air France flight, Birkin had the good fortune of Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, when she accidentally spilled the contents of her bag while complaining about the lack of roomy bags for moms.
It was a lightbulb moment for Dumas, who, according to the Hermès website, immediately “sketched a design for an elastic, rectangular handle with flaps and shimmering saddle stitching,” giving birth to the iconic Birkin bag.

These coveted accessories can cost tens of thousands of dollars and have long waiting lists. Despite her fashion success, Birkin revealed to Caretaker in 2006 that he liked the bag but believed it contributed to his “tendonitis” because of the heavy loads he carried in it.
In a 2006 interview, the actress also reflected on her fashion icon status in a country that “took her” and, humbly, basically pinned her down to fate. “They like my accent [and] when I came here, her skirt was shorter than the others. Everyone at home wears the same as me. I’m the lucky one because I got here first so they thought it was my fashion,” he shared.

During the production of the film “Slogan” in 1968, she met and began a relationship with the French actor and singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, who became a national sensation in France. That same year, Birkin and Gainsbourg collaborated on their most famous song, the provocative duet “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus,” which translates to “I Love You… Me Neither.”
Originally written for Gainsbourg’s ex-girlfriend Brigitte Bardot, “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” was banned from radio in various countries and was condemned by the Vatican for its sexually explicit lyrics. However, despite the controversy, it also brought the duo international fame and introduced them to a wider audience.
