Japan Airlines passengers battle through smoke, see wing engulfed in flames in harrowing video of collision

Horrific video from inside the cabin of a Japanese plane that collided with a military plane shows passengers screaming in the smoke-filled cabin as the horrific incident unfolded at a Tokyo-area airport on Tuesday evening.

Japan Airlines Flight 516 was landing at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport when it collided with a Coast Guard jet before sliding down the runway in a fireball.

“I thought I was going to die,” an X user writes in Japanese with horrible footage.

Terrified users caught it a moment the plane raced on the runway with a flash of orange light from the aircraft’s left engine before making rough contact with the runway.

Passengers heard screaming as the main compartment of the Airbus A350 was filled with smoke, according to another clip posted by the social media user.

“I felt a boom like we hit something and jerked upwards as soon as we landed,” a passenger on the JAL flight told Kyodo news agency. “I saw sparks outside the window and the cabin was filled with gas and smoke.”

The Japan Airlines flight was returning to Tokyo after departing from Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido an hour and a half earlier.

Footage from the airport’s control tower appeared to show the passenger plane was given a clear path to “continue approach” to land, according to The Guardian, citing a live broadcast of air traffic signals.

“Our understanding is that [permission to land] has been given,” a Japan Airlines official told the newspaper.

All 367 passengers and 12 crew members were safely evacuated via emergency inflatable slides when the plane caught fire.

Fourteen people on the passenger plane were injured, according to Japan Airlines, but none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Bombardier’s Japanese Coast Guard Dash-8 maritime patrol aircraft, a twin-engine aircraft, was lining up for takeoff when the passenger plane crashed into it.

Five of the six Coast Guard members were killed while the 39-year-old flight captain escaped but was injured.

The military plane was headed to Niigata Airport to deliver aid to those trapped in the powerful earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day, which killed at least 62 people, military officials said.
