Japan issues tsunami warnings after series of powerful earthquakes, residents urged to flee to high land

TOKYO – Japan issued a tsunami warning Monday after a series of strong earthquakes in the Sea of ​​Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported an earthquake off the Ishikawa coast and nearby regions just after 4pm, one with an initial magnitude of 7.6.

It issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and a low-level tsunami warning or advisory for the entire west coast of Honshu island.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK TV warned torrential waters could reach up to 16.5 feet high and urged people to flee to higher ground or the tops of nearby buildings as soon as possible.

NHK said the tsunami wave could continue to return, and the warning continued to be broadcast almost an hour after the initial warning.

The government is set to hold a press conference that day. Damage reports were not immediately available.

A tsunami about 3 meters high is expected to hit Niigata and other regions on Japan’s west coast. A smaller tsunami wave has been confirmed to have reached the coastline, according to NHK.
