Jay Leno tells his side of the story of the Burbank garage fire.
A little over a month ago, the veteran comedian’s vintage 1907 white steam car exploded after a fuel line clogged.
Gasoline hit Leno’s face and hands, and at the same time a fuel leak and a spark occurred which triggered the explosion. This set the comedian on fire.

He suffered “serious” third-degree burns to his face and hands.
“When you work with cars, you have a lot of accidents,” admitted the 72-year-old. “But this is bigger than most.”
Leno was rushed to the Grossman Burn Center where he underwent skin graft surgery and was placed in a hyperbaric chamber.
According to the FDA, hyperbaric oxygen therapy “involves breathing 100% (pure) oxygen while in a special chamber called a hyperbaric chamber. The air pressure inside is raised to a higher level than normal air pressure. The increased air pressure in the chamber helps the lungs collect more oxygen. Getting more oxygen to tissues that need it can help the body heal and fight certain infections.”

When talking about the vintage cars he’s working on, Leno says, “With a steam car, you have gasoline, but you also have a vaporizer that’s heated by the pilot light to turn the water into steam.”
He went on to describe the horrific scene of the accident.
“I got a face full of gasoline,” Leno recalled. “I knew how close I was to the pilot light and I thought ‘Uh oh.’”
He described it as the “worst sunburn” he had ever experienced.
Leno Compares Burns To “Worst Sunburn”
“It felt like my face was on fire,” Leno recalled. “Probably like the worst sunburn you’ve ever had, that’s fair to say.”
The former ‘Tonight Show’ host said she knew she had to cover her eyes and mouth to avoid “burning out” her lungs or losing her eyes.
“I was under the car for maybe 10 seconds before Dave pulled me out. Longer than that I could lose my eye,” Leno detailed.

The TV personality buried his face in his friend Dave’s work shirt until the flames on his face and body subsided.
Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes and he was rushed to hospital.
Here he was admitted to the Grossman Burn Center.
“When he came in, his burns were deeper than I expected,” said Dr. Peter Grossman, Leno’s surgeon. “Jay is definitely a better person in terms of his recovery considering the severity of his injuries.”
Throughout Leno’s recovery, Dr. Grossman explained that his patients were very enthusiastic, making other hospital patients laugh and optimistic.

“His injuries are serious, his condition is good,” said Dr. Grossman last month, adding that Leno “did pretty well” during the first surgery.
He described Leno as a “good spirit.”
Leno was walking around and even cracking jokes, according to his doctor.
