If you’re not familiar with the play, Broadway.com reports, “’Wicked’ highlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous (or infamous) characters, the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely companion, Glinda the Good Witch. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through life-changing events that eventually label her “evil,” introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself, a very troubled man. not as you remember. As Elphaba fights injustice and seeks to undo past mistakes, dark secrets and personal tragedies shape Oz’s history, paying homage to the classic Wizard of Oz story while changing fans’ understanding of it forever. A cautionary tale of love, friendship and trust, ‘Wicked’ effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.”
Earlier this year, Explosion reported on the film’s director, John M. Chu, announced that the film would be split into two parts.
“Evil” Will Be Split Into Two Parts
In a lengthy note posted to Instagram on Tuesday, April 26, Chu wrote, “SPECIAL WICKED UPDATE/ Thank you for all the support these past few months in anticipation of the WICKED movie. We have so many exciting things to share but for now I’ll give you one… or two, instead.”

Chu later explained that he and his team had a hard time whittling down the musical numbers, songs and script.
“As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it was impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into one film without doing some damage to it. When we try to cut a song or trim a character, the decision starts to feel like a fatal compromise to the source material that has entertained us. All over the years,” he continued. “So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing more depth and surprise to the journey of these beloved characters.”
Chu promised fans that he, Ariana, Erivo, and the cast and crew will create nothing less than “an experience that respects its foundation for all the fans who have been waiting for this film, and to offer a thrilling and fantastical world full of dynamic characters that invite in their unknown selves.
“WICKED” part one will be released in December 2024 and part two of the adaptation will be released in December 2025.
