Jenna Ortega is spilling the “Wednesday” tea!
Although she first received acclaim after her portrayal of young Jane in “Jane the Virgin,” Ortega’s career really took off after she played the lead role of Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series. Nearly four months after the premiere, the actress revealed that she took extra steps to make sure she made a lasting impression on viewers, including rewriting several lines for her character.
Jenna Ortega Made Various Changes To “Wednesday” Script To Make It More Relatable For Teens
Since her appearance in the series, Ortega has garnered numerous awards, including the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award and a deal with Adidas. However, as it turns out, he wouldn’t have achieved such success if he hadn’t made some “reasonable” changes to the script.
The Golden Globes-nominated actor made the revelation during a conversation on Monday’s episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast, where he said:
“When I read the whole series, I realized, ‘Oh, this is for a younger audience.’ When I first joined the show, I didn’t have all the scripts. I thought it would be darker. It’s not… I don’t know what the tone is or what the score is like.”

After claiming that she’s never “had to put my foot down more on a set the way I had to on ‘Wednesday,'” Ortega insisted that Wednesday’s involvement in a love triangle “doesn’t make sense.” “There were times on that set where I became almost unprofessional in the sense where I just started changing lines,” he continued.
The “Yes Day” star explained that even when the script supervisor thought he was fine with certain aspects, he still made adjustments, prompting the writer to ask, “Wait, what happened to that scene?” Ultimately, Ortega’s plan is to give his character more depth than he has on paper, making him more realistic and relatable to a teenager.
“I became very, very protective of him. You can’t lead a story and not have an emotional arc because it’s boring, and nobody likes you. When you’re a kid and say really horrible, offensive things, it’s funny and endearing. But then you become a teenager, and it’s evil, and you know it. Lack of reason,” the 20-year-old player elaborated.
The last time Ortega opened up about facing challenges on the set of “Wednesday,” he noted that it was director Tim Burton who called for his character to “have no expression or emotion at all.” According to the Austin Film Critics Association Award winner, Burton wanted a “flat surface,” which he understood “except when you’re trying to move the plot along, and Wednesday is in every scene.”
She also clashed with the 64-year-old over her viral dance scene in episode four. Ortega revealed that he told her not to hire any choreographers because she felt “too overwhelmed,” choosing to do the dance herself.

Last month, The Blast noted that Ortega’s highly anticipated return to the hit Netflix series “You,” has been delayed by his “Wednesday” schedule. According to the report, the actress of the psychological thriller — Sera Gamble — has revealed the entertainment giant’s desire to bring the actress back as Ellie — one of the few survivors of Joe Goldberg’s friendship — played by Penn Badgley — a deadly friendship, with stated:
“We wanted to bring Ellie back, and we heard, ‘Oh, Jenna’s doing a show.’”
The writer went on to say that since Ortega’s presence was pleasant, the cast and crew would appreciate working with him again, especially since he was referenced in the ongoing third season. Although Goldberg has taken on a new identity as Professor Jonathan Moore, his new friendship with one of his students, Nadia, occasionally evokes memories of his close bond with Ellie.
The actress also expressed her excitement to reprise her role in 2019 when she revealed that she would love to see her character “back and in control of her life.” He added:
“Ellie has so much potential and talent that she shouldn’t waste because of her.”
While fans wait to see if Ortega will make time in his schedule to film, he has been busy with other projects, such as his soon-to-be-released slasher film “Scream VI,” “FinestKind,” “Miller’s Girl,” a Trey The untitled Edward Shults, and another season of “Wednesday.”
