Although some publishers refuse to read book recommendations based on the title, McCurdy has certainly attracted the attention of many who have read his books and helped him to remain on the bestseller list for so long. The past year has been an adventure for the author who says she is better known for her books than her acting career.

“Nobody approached me for being an actor from a TV show they watched as a kid,” he told New York Times. “Since last year, he has been recognized 100 percent as the author of this book and I am very grateful for that. I wish I could describe to you how grateful I am. It really made my heart skip a beat.”

One of the most memorable moments he recognized happened at a dentist appointment.

“The dental assistant came in with her phone while I kept the whole clip in my mouth. Really held my mouth open and, like, the gun fell,” she said. “He was like, ‘Oh my God, can I get a picture? I love your book!’”

“It was a very bonding experience,” he said.

McCurdy also shares some information for anyone just getting started with writing their own book.

“Don’t read anything you might be inclined to copy. And write the first draft just for yourself,” he shared. “If your story is something you want to share with the world, try to separate yourself from your own experience as much as possible.”

He’s working on a second book and says he probably only kept about 20 percent of the original version.

“Who knows if I would have written that if I had been caught up in doubt too early. But I like to bring doubt when I go through the first draft, thinking about what needs to be rewritten and what needs to stay,” he said. “I think there is a time and a place for the inner critic; I think there is a place for that guy. The inner critic is a man, right?”
