The New York Times bestselling author shared her acne journey during her latest podcast episode, “Hard Feelings with Jennette McCurdy.”

“I’m 31 years old and I’m still struggling -capital-S Struggling – with acne,” she says. “It makes me feel insecure. Oh my god, you guys, it affects my self-esteem in a negative way. If I have a good skin day, I feel better about myself, and they are few and far between. And then most of the time when I’m really struggling, it just makes me feel a little crummy.”

The former “iCarly” star explained that around the age of 15 her skin problems started, attributing it to heavy makeup and bright lights while working on set. But when filming stopped, the acne continued.

McCurdy also shared that he has tried various medications prescribed by dermatologists, including the controversial Accutane, but to no avail.

“I feel, like, dirty because of my acne. It makes me sad because I feel that way about myself but I’m not sure how not,” she said. “Maybe you look at this creature like, ‘Jennette, you look fine. ‘ First, you can’t tell from an Instagram photo. Second, people I know well will say, “What are you talking about?’ Because I’ve talked about my insecurities around my skin to a few friends. I know how to find a good base color and the right application to make my skin look as smooth as it can be and it’s not super textured.”

McCurdy admits that self-acceptance has been a huge hurdle for her, and “the hardest thing to try.”

“The only thing I haven’t tried, I guess, is just accepting and owning it. And maybe that’s why the only thing I haven’t tried is the hardest thing to try.”

Jennette McCurdy Had A Pregnancy Scare While Taking Accutane

The “I’m Glad My Mom Died” author revealed that while taking Accutane for her acne, she had a terrifying pregnancy scare. The drug is known to cause birth defects and anyone taking it must sign a contract saying you will not get pregnant, or get pregnant, and will use two forms of birth control.

“You have to take a test to show that you know all the risks involved and you have to sign a contract that says you will not get pregnant – under no circumstances will you get pregnant while taking Accutane,” she explained. “You need to use two forms of contraception. You have to go and you have to get blood once a month. You have to go to your dermatologist after getting your blood work every month just to check, you just give your dermatologist a chance to see your skin up close and how your lips are peeling because that’s a side effect of Accutane.”

At one point while on medication, McCurdy didn’t feel like going to her doctor’s office for her regular appointment so she called to cancel. But the dermatologist called her back and told her she needed to come in.

“The receptionist sounded, like, stressed and she said, ‘Hey, so I talked to the dermatologist again and she said you really need to come in, okay?’ I was like, ‘What the f—? Why does the receptionist sound so depressed? Is he okay? What’s going on?’” he explained.

“I went, ‘I can’t do it. Can I just come in next week?’ He said, ‘No, because we got your blood test results and there is a pregnancy.'”

After a scary what-if scare, McCurdy was told that sometimes false positives can happen while taking medication. After several blood tests, she found out that she was not pregnant.

The experience scared him enough to stop taking medicine.

“The experience was very scary,” he said. “That I was like, I have to get out of this s—. This is not for me.”
