Jennifer Hudson, who has come a long way in her entertainment career, remembers her debut on “American Idol” two decades ago. She recently went back in time with a charming clip from her audition, recognizing the 20th anniversary of her first appearance on the show.
The youngest female EGOT awardee in history also wrote a touching note, thanking God and her supporters for being with her throughout her journey.
Jennifer Hudson Celebrates 20th Anniversary of ‘American Idol’ Tryout With Throwback Clip
On Sunday, August 20, Jhud uploaded a video from his first “American Idol” audition twenty years ago. The heartwarming, nostalgic post features 21-year-old Hudson from Chicago, Illinois, who believes she’s America’s next big thing, giving a powerful rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Share Your Love with Me.”

Her performance certainly wowed the judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell, as Jackson called her “absolutely brilliant” while Abdul praised her “brilliant voice.” Likewise, Cowell marveled as he said, “See you in Hollywood,” after getting approval from the other judges.
Their reaction was everything the “The Color Purple” performer had hoped for and more as she rushed to find her loved ones in a closed room, excitedly declaring in a singsong voice, “I’m going to Hollywood, baby.”
Captioning it, she stated that on that day in 2003, she and her best friend, Walter Williams, traveled “all the way to Atlanta, Georgia, for my American Idol audition. 20 years, yeah! Look at God!! I’m on a roller coaster That American Idol, and it’s been going on ever since!”
Hudson admits that although she has “lived a lot” since then she will always be “the same girl from the South Side of Chicago trying to reach my goals!” At the end of the note, he thanked his fans for being with him on “this journey,” because he couldn’t have done it without them.
In no time, the comment section was filled with praise and congratulations. “And I love and support you from today!!! Keep it up bro!!!” said a follower.
The second added, “You deserve all the goodness that comes your way. Your voice lifts my spirits.” Another commenter gushed. “Oh God, I remember this like it was yesterday. Just like I said your show, this audition, your performance, this particular season is everything to me. I’m obsessed with you!!”
“Paula had to say Amen! The voice is anointed! Been a fan since day one! Such an inspiration! ❤️❤️??,” a fourth comment read, followed by a fifth admirer exclaiming:
“20 years later, the beautiful woman in this video is an EGOT and a winner ??????????????????????.” One fan later wrote, “And our lives have changed forever. You and your talent are a gift to us all???✨.”
Hudson’s rise to fame is undoubtedly inspiring because it was done the old-fashioned way. Born the third youngest child of Samuel Simpson and Darnell Donerson, the “RESPECT” actor had a passion for entertainment from a young age.
Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey inspired her interest in music before she began singing at the age of seven as a member of their church choir and doing some community theater.
Eventually, the talk show host signed up for “American Idol,” which was the launching pad for her big break. Unfortunately, he did not win that season as he was eliminated after receiving the lowest number of votes for his performance in Barry Manilow’s “Weekend in New England”.
Her departure not only shocked fans but also the judges, but Hudson used her failure to propel her career in Hollywood by releasing her debut album in 2007. However, it was her role as Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical “Dreamgirls” that solidified her status earning her two EGOT titles — Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Fans will remember that the versatile artist rounded out his collection with a Tony Award for his work as a producer on the musical “A Strange Loop” as a producer.
On Instagram, she was snapped rocking a long-sleeved purple custom-cut top and flaunting a gorgeous pixie cut hairstyle. Announcing the achievement, she captioned the post, “One year ago today, I became the 17th EGOT!! There is no limit to what God can do! A year later, and I’m still 17.”
