‘Danger!’ Host Mayim Bialik Talks About Her Colonoscopy: ‘It’s No Fun Getting Old’

Earlier this month, the “Blossom” child star revealed her experience of getting a colonoscopy to downplay the medical procedure in an Instagram video shot in her hospital gown. “It’s not so much fun getting older. Especially when you have to have a routine colonoscopy and really wish you didn’t have to,” she wrote in the caption before breaking down four separate reasons why she wanted to share her experience online.

“Well, I’m sharing this because: 1. Let’s de-stigmatize routine things that we really shouldn’t have problems with as society says – ignoring things won’t make them go away! Also, let’s not be Puritans about colonoscopies. It’s a thing,” he wrote. “2. It’s not bad at all. 3. I have a tip to share another time to help you not have a bad problem. 4. Please don’t delay taking care of your body. It has to do with your mind and your mental and emotional well-being. Be proactive.”

Fans took to the comments to explain how important it is to get a colonoscopy and share their own personal stories about how a colonoscopy detects colon cancer. “I had a colonoscopy in March and found out I had colon cancer. My surgeon removed the cancer and I am almost 4 months into 6 months of chemotherapy. So far everything looks really good,” commented one fan.

“OH GOD. My dad just had a colonoscopy today and found out he has colon cancer. He’s 79. They want to do chemo to shrink the tumor and think they might not need to do surgery. My dad isn’t sure if he wants to have any treatment ,” shared another follower. “If he doesn’t get treatment then they say he has about 8 months. Get tested, and call your doctor today. Help from a daughter who doesn’t want to lose her dad!”

Mayim Bialik Shares Update… She Survived!

In a follow-up Instagram video, the “Call Me Kat” star revealed that she had “survived” her colonoscopy. “Colonoscopy Update: I survived! Here are some reasons to consider scheduling a preventative procedure if you’re eligible,” she wrote in the caption, referring to her video. “And stay tuned for my best prep tips. Physical care is mental care!!”

Many fans agree that the preparation itself is much more difficult than the actual test. “I agree with you on demystifying colonoscopy! People are put off by the prep but if your doctor prescribes Ducolax and Miralax then the prep isn’t a big deal. It’s the other drinks that can trouble people. Yuck,” shared one fan.

Other followers point out that getting a colonoscopy isn’t exactly accessible to everyone, as someone is required to stay with you during the appointment and drive you home afterwards. Many fans commented that they couldn’t get a colonoscopy appointment simply because they didn’t know anyone well enough to stay with them or drive them home.

“Unfortunately, at least where I live, they need someone to drive me, stay with me during the procedure, drive me home, and stay with me for at least 24 hours afterward. And I don’t have anyone who can do that, ” commented a fan.

“The problem is that many people are alone. They have no one to drive them and stay. In our area, they DO insist on someone being there the whole time and driving you home. They will NOT allow taxis or Ubers either because those drivers are not responsible for taking you up the outside stairs or inside stairs etc,” wrote another follower. “Outpatient procedures are more common but troublesome because being alone just a few hours after anesthesia is not safe. Insurance companies have taken away care. Loneliness is more common than most people think.”
