During the Oct. 25 episode of the “Archetypes” podcast, Markle talked about the myth of the “angry Black woman” with actress Issa Rae, writer Ziwe Fumudoh, and professor Emily Bernards. After Rae mentioned that she was once called “special,” Markle said that she also uses that term to describe herself and said it can still be a loaded description.
Markle shared that she was constantly “curling and tiptoeing” into the room and had to consciously stop the habit. She said, “I was just like, ‘Oh my God, stop, stop, whisper and tiptoe around him.’ Just say what you need. You’re allowed to set boundaries. You’re allowed to be clear. It doesn’t make you demanding. It doesn’t bother you. [It] make you clear.”
The “Bench” author also talked about the concept of ambition with tennis icon Serena Williams in another episode. In the episode, Markle revealed that she never felt the negative connotation behind being ambitious until she started dating Harry. He said, “Apparently, ambition is a terrible, terrible thing – for a woman, that is.”

In the first “Archetypes” episode, Markle shared details of the fire incident involving her son Archie while they were on tour in South Africa in 2019. She revealed that they had to drop off 4-month-old Archie at a guest housing unit before starting their royal engagement.
Unfortunately, just after the royal couple ended their first engagement, they received some very scary news about a fire in their housing unit. Markle said, “We ended the engagement, we got in the car and they said there was a fire in the house. There is a fire in the baby’s room.”

Markle went on to reveal that, thankfully, Archie was not in his room when the fire started and his staff quickly got it under control. To add to the problem, she and Prince Harry were informed that they had to go ahead with the next royal engagement before they could go home to check on Archie.
The former “Suits” star explained that she wanted to tell the promoter about her next involvement in the fire incident, but her request was apparently denied. Markle said, “The focus ended up being on how she looked and not how she felt. And even if we were moved to another place after that, we still had to leave her and go do another official engagement.”

In an August episode with singer Mariah Carey, titled “Diva Duality,” Markle talked about how being with Harry changed her perspective on many things, including race. She said, “I think it’s very different for us because we’re light-skinned. You are not treated as a black woman. You are not treated as a white woman. You kind of fit in between.
Markle spoke about how she began to focus on her race after meeting Harry and finally understood what it felt like to “be treated like a black woman.” In another episode with guests Constance Wu and Jenny Slate, she talks about how Harry saved her life by connecting her with a mental health professional to help her when her mental health was at its worst.
The Duchess then encouraged fans to always know when they need help and to prioritize their mental health. He said, “But I think it’s important for all of us to be really honest about what it is [we] necessary and not afraid to make peace with that, to ask for it.”
